The only time that my turtles have ever tried to bite me was one time that I had forgotten to feed them all day. When I put my hand it their tank to take them out, one tried to bite my finger. I think so long as you feed them & don\'t poke them or do anything aggressive towards them, you should be okay.
My turtles are handled by everyone from my 5 year old niece to my 77 year old grandfather.

Hope this helps :D

I heard they can bite really hard. I read somewhere that they could break a pencil. Don\'t know if thats true or not. I\'m sure if your not inticing, or if you feed them, they shouldn\'t bite. I know when my turtle bites down it makes a pretty loud snapping noise, I wouldn\'t want to get my finger in his mouth to find out how bad it would hurt.

Even though I have had Joe since she was quite small, I know she would bite me if given the chance. She HATES being picked up, and I have to admit at times I am afraid of her. It takes 2 hands to pick her up and I often wonder if she can reach around to get me - her head can come out awfully far! If anyone has been bit, please share the outcome... Was there pain? or no pain.....

Sure, they can bite. Our turtle likes to be hand-fed the floating food sticks and he\'d gladly take a bite out of me if I\'m not careful. For awhile I had to give him shots for pneumonia and he\'d really try to take a chomp on me while I was trying to get the shot under his arm.

Although I\'ve always managed to escape before getting the full effect of the bite, I can tell you that their bite can be quite hard.

If your RES is small like the size of a quarter it wont hurt at all, it will just scare you al little. If they are bigger watch out I\'ve seen aligator snapers bite through large sticks and the turtle wasn\'t much bigger than my hand!

I got bit by a friend\'s box turtle when I was very young... it hurt quite a bit, but it healed pretty well. The turtle mistook my finger as a carrot as was trying to feed it a blade of grass -- oops! :)

Anyway, I don\'t believe turtles can arch their necks around far enough to get a good solid bite on you when you\'re holding it. Just hold it firmly by the shell, and you should be fine... just always keep a watch on the turtle\'s chompers!

Snapping and Alligator snapping turtles can also reach their heads back and bite you while you\'re holding them!

My Russian Tortoise tried to bite me when I didn\'t feed him. He\'s about the size of my hand though, so he couldn\'t do any damage. it just made me laugh. That\'s when i realized taht I could hand-feed him too.

when I was little I was bitten by a wild eastern painted turtle, it didn\'t hurt or bring blood or anything. Just felt kinda like a pinch. I couldn\'t blame the turtle, I had my finger in it\'s face.

I think if you\'ve ever seen a turtle bite into & chomp off a piece of fish, could you tell that they could do some damage. Whenever I put some fish in my turts\' tanks, I\'m amazed how quickly they could tear them apart.
