I found a poor turtle with only one eye.
He appears to be a red eared slider, he is about 5 inches long. How can I tell his age? Also, how long do turtles live? I\'m very afraid of getting attached to him then losing him. Can anyone help?

My cousin found a turtle a few weeks back, and when I took it to the Conservatory in my neighborhood park, they told me it was around 50 years old.

I asked the Park Ranger how they could tell and she said by the size, weight and color among other things. According the Ranger, turtles could live up to 70+ years in captivity.

Hope this helps. :)

What kind of turtle was this? RES can live 20 - 40 years, box turteles up to 100 years, but in captivity usually only around 30 - 40 years.

Here is a full guide which explains it all. In summary you can't truly know a turtle's age unless you know it's birthdate, but you can estimate using some little tricks.
