Hi. I just got a red-eared slider from a friend about two weeks ago. I bought him a bigger tank with a flourescent light, halongen light, filter, heater, basking area, and rocks. There is this white filmy residue that I can not get rid of in the tank. It us scattered in tiny patches on the surface. It\'s a thin film and there is some attched to his skin. I don\'t think it is normal and I am not sure how to get rid of it. Does anyone have any insight/suggestions on this matter? Thank you.

The film on top of the water i think is protien, but its not harmful, to get rid of it just aggitate the waters surface with the filter. And what your seeing on the turtles is probably the turtles shedding.

Will he shed often? I also noticed that some of his pieces of shell have been flaking off. Is that normal too?

Yes its normal, but you shouldnt be able to see to much of the skin shedding, if you can, the temps could be too high, you could be over feeding, or your turtle has a fungal infection. Its probably the temps or overheating.

How much should I be feeding him? I have no idea how old he is, but he is about 6 inches long.
