HElP! My brothers turtle keeps opening its mouth like it has the hiccups and acting tired, not eating, etc. Could this be respiratory? What can we do to help?

What are the water and basking area temps? (For hatchlings, 78-80F for water and 85-90F for basking area are good.) If your turtle is gaping/yawning frequently, it could mean that he`s getting a respiratory infection. Because you said he`s inactive and not eating, taking him to a herp vet would be the best thing to do. If you don`t have one, try www.arav.org/USMembers.htm to find one. Until you get him to a vet, keep him out of drafts and breezes and up the temps slightly, 83-84F for the water and about 92F for the basking area. The warmth will help him fight the infection until you get him to a vet. Good luck.

Open-mouth breathing is a sign of a possible respiratory infection.
