Red Slider with swollen cheeks. WHY?

I inherited a baby (little 1.5\")turtle who is eating well and otherwise seems happy but he has always had one cheek that is very big now his other cheek is beginning to look like it is swelling.

Not sure if my turtle is male or female. Looked on your site but didn\'t understand some terms used so I am yet to determine my turtle\'s sex.

Also I haven\'t had a UVB light on him yet, but he has had a basking rock with a regular light.

BTW, he needs that UVB light or his shell will eventually soften (another painful disease).
