For a male RES a 55 gallon tank should by sufficient.

I have heard 10 gallons per inch of turtle. So 55 is perfect for full grown male RES

Males can grow to be 7-9 inches. Your turtle will not nessarily stop at 5.5 inches just because he\'s in a 55-gallon tank. If he does grow much larger that that, he will need a larger tank for the sake of his health and stress level (too small a space creates stress).
