Hello all,

I lost an African Mud turtle about a month ago. It was such a hard emotional time! Her name was Abbey turtle. We love her very much and miss her greatly to this day. Long story short, she had swelling in her one of her back leg area that went eventually went down to her leg. It looked like her skin was stretching (it was aweful). Anyways the vet that we took her to, had me give her a shot of Batrol in her front legs for 7 days. I had to separate her from her sister of 4 years(a map turtle named Sally turtle) and put her in a separate tank to monitor her more closely. She wasn\'t getting any better, so we took her to Cornell University here in NY to a exotic specialist. She took a tissue sample from Abbey, and we waited for the results, for them to come back a very agressive form of cancer. Unfortunately it was inoperable. So I had my husband to take her back to Cornell 1 hour away to have her euthanized. She certainly seemed to be not eating as well at that point. Sorry to give you the history, but we would like to get another sibling for Sally, She looks lonely in the 55 gallon tank. I would like some recommendations on what species to get. Abbey was very personable and friendly(the poor girl never tried to bite when i had to give her the shots)! I would like to actually adopt an unwanted turtle, but i would like to get a very personable turtle like Abbey. Sally is nice and I love her, but I would like something different with character. Sorry to ramble on, but it helps to talk about our loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your kind words, I think Sally is lonely and I feel bad for her. I\'ve been offered probably 3 different turtles before Abbeys diagnosis, and I should have taken them. Now I can\'t find any! I know, I can go and buy a turtle, but i\'d really like to give an unwanted turtle a home. I know I read that the African Mud turtles can be shy and sometimes agressive, but Abbey never, ever was. I don\'t care about paying for an adoption fee and shipping. It\'s sorta like going to the pound and paying for an unaltered cat, when theres many free ones in the paper. Unfortunately today is a throw away society. And even though it\'s more money, thats not the issue with us. I paid $15.00 for Abbey(the petshop coldn\'t even tell me what species she was) and her vet bills were well over $500.00 by the time we were done. I have to wake up in the morning and look at myself in the mirror every morning before going to work, and I can feel good about what i\'ve done.
