shell problems

well ever since i got my turtle sheldon his shell has been broken. i geuss thats how u would say it. there are a couple of sections on his shell that are missing is there any way they will come back. i am also worried about the sourronding ones. they are broken and have algae underneath that i cant get out. is this a problem?

Without a picture, it`s difficult to tell. But from what you say, it doesn`t sound very good. When you say parts of the shell are missing, do you mean bone is exposed? If bacteria gets into the shell, it will cause shell rot and worse. Is he basking under proper lighting (UVB light and heat light)? I would keep his water really clean and take him to a herp vet to have him assessed. If you don`t already have one, try http://www.arav.org/USMembers.htm to find one nearest to you.

should everyone already know a vet for their turtle just in case

It`s a good idea to know of a good herp vet you can trust ahead of time in case you have an emergency.
