How are you attaching it to the tank? If it is with a reflector and a clip then it can be adjusted. I have found that it depends on the basking spot height. Generally speaking, the distance should be whatever causes the temperature to be between 85 and 90 degrees F. Hope this helps http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/care.htm#Heating.

thanks for the help. i am attaching it with a clamp and reflector.....i guess i\'ll jsut throw a thermometer in the basking ares for a while to see. i jsut hope i don\'t break anymore of my mom\'s thermometers. she\'ll kick my butt.

You could get a thermometer that suctions to the wall of the tank near the basking area (as well as a water thermometer).

i have one that has a suction thingy but i dosent stick it just floats

i use the kinds that u stick to the side of the tank. they are small, easy to use, and cheap
