I use a 5% UVB Reptiglo florescent tube for my 40 gallon rubbermaid, it just hangs down one side, and light escapes thru the top also into my living room, and it does light up the room quite a bit, Is This Harmful to humens??..Does it affect our eyes? or increase chances of Skin Cancer etc?

Ultraviolet light that comes direct from the sun or sun lamps can cause skin cancer if the exposure is long enough and certain other conditions are right. The attached web site will help explain how UV rays damage skin cells http://www.sciam.com/askexpert_question ... &topicID=4 The same is true of eye damage http://www.webpost.net/ne/netab/uvdamage.htm
If you desire to look directly into the light for an extended period you might damage your eyes, which is not recommended. Here is some information on the medical use of UVB http://www.beatpsoriasis.com/uvb-technical.htm. I don\'t think that exposure to the 5% UVB lamp on the basis that you are using it and at the level of its output is any danger but the information is provided for you to make your decision. I found the information under a search for \"5% UVB light\" if you want more information. Hope this helps.

I used to wonder about that myself. The UVB output of 5% bulbs is much weaker that that of the sun, though, and you wouldn`t be staring at it for long periods of time, so I shouldn`t think it would cause damage. I have read, though, that lights with more than 5% UVB output should not be placed too close to turtles because of the possibility of eye damage, so if you had one of the stronger ones, I`d be more concerned.
