My son caught a red ear slider while fishing. He brought Captain Hook home in a bucket, and we currently have him in a large pond shell in the back yard. I was told by a neighbor that turtles carry salmonella and could make my children very sick. I have the kids wash their hands when they are done handling Captain Hook, but was wondering if there is any truth to the statement? I have a 1 1/2 year old and she doesn\'t always tell me she has been petting Captain Hook when she is outside? Any help is appreciated! THanks!

it\'s true that turtles can carry salmonella. usually when they are very young. it\'s always wise to get your children to wash their hands after they pet the turtle or come inside after being outside just incase. turtles are not good around dogs either, the dogs can contract salmonella too along with chewing on the turtle with isn\'t healthy for the turtle. =o) just make the children wash their hands and your pretty much set.
