Thanks! I wanted to build a basking area with plexiglass, but I never got around to it. I tried the plastic box, and they like it. It also took care of the algae problem. Not enough light in the tank to grow algae.

I LOVE your setup, I feel bad for my turtle now, then again I am only a beginner. How long have you had yours?

I have had them for 1 year now. I started with a 35 gallon tank and upgraded to a 55 when they were about 6 months old. They still had plenty of room in the 35 gallon, but I had the 55 gallon and couldn\'t wait to get it set up for them.

My problem is that most of the time my brain gets ahead of my fingers and I make mistakes, but it always bothers me to see one of my mistakes that I end up going back and fixing it before I post the message, I guess I\'m weird that way.:D

I don\'t think they meant to light the water, so no algea grows.

There is a space in the basking area that does not have rocks on the bottom. With the clear container, it lets enough light through to let some light into the water, but no more algae growth.

I haven\'t had any problems with scratching, but those claws just shot out to that length recently. I looked one day and was shocked to see how long they got! Didn\'t notice that they were growing so fast.

The turtle\'s shells are about the size of the palm of my hand. I figured that if I upgrade now, I will save myself trouble later. Having two turtles, I am looking at some bigger tanks, but I won\'t be getting one for a while. I figure they have plenty of room to grow for now. The basking area is a 2 ft. x 1.5 ft. underbed storage container. I cut a hole in the lid and put a wire grate on top for the basking lamps. A neighbor gave me the ceramic log, so I wedged it in to give them access to the basking area. I thought I would have some problems with escapees, but they don\'t go anywhere.

I had plans to build the plexiglass condo too. I was going to enclose it so I had no escapees. I needed something to get them by for now and this worked out great. I would like to still build the basking condo for viewing purposes (I think it will look better than the storage container), but I just have not gotten around to it. Maybe someday..........

I don\'t change it nearly as much as the 35 gallon. I do a partial water change every two or three weeks. I change about 80% of the water, siphoning from the bottom to clean out the junk. I clean the filter and without the algae problem, I am not scrubing any more. I bring in the garden hose to fill back up and all done.

I don\'t mean to be dumb by asking this question.

Are the plants in the background real (they look real to me)? My guess is no.

The plants are fake. It is taped to the back of the tank. There is plastic plants floating in the tank. The turtles like to rest on top of them.
