Could be a territorial thing.

Well all turtles are capable of biting.It probably has nothing to do with age.It is probably territorial or behavioral.

My turtle,Tanjobi was like that when I first got him.But I got him as an adult (8 yrs old) and he had been through alot.He was a rescue.Anyway he snapped at everything,including the towel or my sweater...etc.But he has stopped doing that.He no longer snaps when I take him out or anything.

However he could start snapping/biting tommorrow again for all I know.

Just don't put your hands in the front of their faces.
