My new Slider, Samantha, is not basking on her rock under the light anymore. She has a 5 gallon tank with a 15watt buld and a nice rock she can climb on. She is only the size of a silver-dollar..thats the reason for the small tank. She loves to swim and for the first 2 weeks, loved to bask under the light. Now she is staying in the water holding on to her rock to get some sun on her face, and swimming lots. She is eating like a little piggy so we think she is healthy. Any advice? What a great website for new RES owners. Thanks!

check the temperature in ur basking area...maybe is no enought hot or too hot...
and u said u use a rock maybe the rock get too hot..res are big basker..ur basking area temp.should be in the high80F/low 90F, another think, check if she\'s able to go on the basking spot...personnally i have to put some water every 2or 3 days cause my level(of water in the fishtank) get to low and my turtle cannot climb on her basking rock...
hope it help...

i have a turtle for about 2 months now..when i first got her she used to bask normally then stopped for some time..i realized that she was shy during that period i don\'t know why! now when she got a little bit bigger she basks normally but only if no one is around

if ur turtle is healthy then there\'s nothing to worry about except for having some algae grow on the shell bcz of staying wet

and yes make a check as yaya said

Thanks for the speedy answers! My water temp is 85-90..the basking rock is not cold, but not hot..seems fine to the touch. I read another entry about cleaning the tank water..and last weekend I did change her h20 and moved the rock location so she would be closer to the light.Maybe she is just being stubborn and needs to accept the change! Thank you guys for the info. This is a fabulous website. My seven year old loves this little turtle! We named her Samantha because we are not sure of the sex. So if she is a boy..we can just call her Sam!

most probably ur turtle needs some time to adapt to the change especially it\'s still a baby and new..anyways good luck with it and we\'re always here for any question:)

IS IT A UVA OR UVB BULB?
AND ID IT IS DOES IT GIVE OFF HEAT?
I GOT A NEW UVA/UVB BULB AND MINE STOPPED BASKING , THEN I REALIZED IT DIDN\'T GIVE OFF ANY HEAT SO THAT WAS WHY HE STOPPED BASKING

ur water temp. is too hot...it should be around 75F...the high 80F/low 90F is for ur basking area...maybe it\'s why she don\'t go anymore on the basking spot....the water temp should be that high when ur turtle are sick...cause too hot water temp can cause overshedding and make ur turtle growing too fast...wich is not good...

too check the temp in ur basking area just use a normal thermometer that u put on something to be on the same height that ur turtle is...lleave it there for 5 to 10 minutes and u should have a good idea of the temperature...my bet is that ur water is too hot and ur basking area is too cold...and like slidersroc said u should have a uvb light and a basking light...
