i\'m not sure that there is a scientific way for determining age but what i know is according to measurements. baby turtles between 1-2 inches are few months old..that\'s what i know

when i got mine i knew nothing about turtles so my friend told me i can know their age from the spots on their bellies..that was so stupid!

We\'ve only had this little fellow for 1 month and he has come from the wild. We have taken him in because he not well. We would like to know what type of turtle he is and his age, we know he is a male as the vet told us, his shell measures 7.5cm/3 inches long.
Can anyone advise ?

the vet couldn\'t guess his age? if three inches then he\'s probably more than a year old..i think so cz males are small in size

I FOUND THIS FOLLOWING MESSAGE IN THE MISSOURI CONSERVATIONIST FOR KIDS WEBSITE:

http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/kid ... 0/01/4.htm

\"The upper shell of a turtle is called the \"carapace.\" The lower shell is the \"plastron.\" Most turtles\' shells are composed of bony plates covered by a layer of horny scales called \"scutes.\"
You can tell how old a box turtle is by looking at the plastron. A scale will have rings on it, a little like tree rings. Every year the turtle adds or grows another \"ring.\" Count them to see how old it is. Once a box turtle is over 30, it\'s hard to see the individual rings.\"

IT IS NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE, I HOPE IT HELPS YOU OUT.

I DON\'T KNOW, I HAVEN\'T GOTTEN HOME TO CHECK MY RED EAR SLIDER, BUT IT IS PROBABLY THE SAME AS OTHERS, ALTHOUGH, IF THE TURTLE IS LESS THAN A YEAR, YOU WOULD PROBABLY HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING THE RINGS.

i read somewhere then u can\'t determine the age of the turtle by the ring since turtle can have \"good and bad\" year of growing...(depend of food ,age, enclosure, ect.)when the turtle is hatchling it can grow couple inch, and some \"bad\" year just grow half a inch...so it\'s not accurate..

I READ THAT MYSELF, THERE REALLY ISN\'T A SURE WAY OF TELLING HOW OLD OR EVEN THE SEX OF TURTLES, FROM WHAT I HAVE READ, I HAVE TWO LITTLE RED EAR SLIDERS, THEY ARE BOTH ABOUT 2 OR 21/2\" LONG, I ASKED FOR A MALE AND A FEMALE(MOSTLY FOR COMPANIONSHIP) AND I WAS ASSURED THAT THEY WERE MALE AND FEMALE BUT I CAN\'T TELL MYSELF, I READ THAT THE MALE WILL HAVE THE UNDERSIDE OF HIS SHELL CONCAVE SO THAT IT WILL FIT OVER THE FEMALE BETTER DURING MATING, BUT BOTH OF MY TURTLES SEEM TO HAVE FLAT UNDERBELLIES. OH WELL, AS LONG AS THEY ARE HAPPY.
