Does anyone know if red-ear sliders can HEAR?
My turtle \"Petey\" will bask in his tank but jumps into the water when someone passes the room & I\'m not sure if he hears someone or sees the person.

he probably sees the person and feels vibrations and/or sounds.

yes, turtles can hear.

and also, i don\'t think one person on this board could tell you that their turtle doesn\'t or hasn\'t done that in the past. they\'d be lying if they did. ;)

my theory is that turtles feel unsafe on dry \"land\" and the water makes them feel like they can\'t be touched.

If you have ever worn ear plugs or if you ever plugged your ears with your fingers, then you already know how turtles hear, it is a muffled sound, they can hear but not all that well.:D

Mine look at me when I talk to them and they jump in the water when the dog barks.

Well, all sound is is vibration that our ears enterpret as sounds, so turtles can feel these vibrations and being scaredy cats, they jump in the water.:D

I was told once that turtles are sensitive to lower sounds, like the bass from a stereo. Has anyone else heard of this?

lower sounds have higher vibrations, that is probably why you have heard that.

my poor guys: this guy who lives in the FIRST FLOOR (we live on the 3rd floor) plays his music SO loud that it shakes my room. :( i hope it doesn\'t bother them!

OH sh## that can\'t be good!!! Those soundwaves damage your turtle\'s hearing abilities and its ear functions!!! SAVE HIM!!!
