i recently adopted a turtle. i am not sure what sex it is and it is approximently 4 months old.

it is usally very playful and swiming alot but with in the past 24 hours it has been rubbing his behind on the rocks in the same spot near the filter and then sitting there for the whole night.

does anyone know why this may be?

I have a farfetched guess: the turtle could have a piece of poo stuck in his --- and he is trying to get it out, or is he mating with it????

I am NOT trying to be silly.:)

Maybe it just feels good, most of us like to scratch:D, sometimes it feels so good that we start to draw blood, that\'s when we know we should stop:D:D:D

my roomate has a big fishtank. i noticed yesterday that one of her new fish has ick. (some of you might know what this is .. if you don\'t: it\'s a parasite that is irritating to fish)

she went and bought medicine tonight and i was reading the box and it said that fish might rub themselves on the gravel if they have ick or a few other problems (fungus, etc).

do you see anything abnormal about his skin? is he shedding? just a few suggestions i have on what to look for.

It could be poop that he is trying to get out has the water turned yellow.

RES can sleep underwater, mine do:D, also just because the water is clean doesn\'t mean it really is, remember they use the water to poop and pee in.:D

i think ur turtle is ok..a new turtle might be shy sometimes and maybe he feels better when he scratches his back..why didn\'t he do it before? maybe ur baby just discovered the fun of it..check his shell maybe he\'s shedding scutes and it bothers him..if he\'s still eating and everything\'s fine i wouldn\'t worry a lot..
welcome to the board:)

water should be inc. a bit so if he flips on his back he can turn easily without the help of anyone..don\'t worry the are good swimmers when they learn how to,,that means start increasing the water level gradually till it gets deep enough and he knows how to swim well..it\'ll be more fun for both of u believe me:)
both bulbs u have are for heat? they need a UV bulb too so they get vitamin D which usually is taken from the sun..if he\'s fine then it\'s great u\'ll discover that ur turtle has a different personality so don\'t expect him to act as any other one..good luck:)

if he went to that horrible set up to the new (well, same .. but clean) one, i would definitely say that your turtle was just being shy.

just make sure that you have an adequate set up for your little guy and all will be well!

i\'m happy to join the board!

i figured out that he kept rubbing in front of the part of the filter where the water shoots out so i assume he just likes it. I changed his water and gave him a few carrot peices so now hes(or shes) :S the happiest turtle ever.
