Hey,
Anyone have any advice on what to do when a RES becomes too good for turtle sticks? My RES now only want\'s to eat Mini krill and baby shrimp ...He ignores the sticks that he has been eating for over 2 years,(he just lets them float into his chin and he pretends he doesnt see or feel them) I try to get a good variety of food for him, but now he\'s become too finicky....Should i just continue feeding him what he want\'s? OR should I not give into his little stubborn self? Thanks Chrissy :)

shrimp and other food with high protein content should just been given as a treat occasionnally...too much protein make the turtle grow too fast wich could result in health problem..the pellet should be a staple in ur turtle diet(feed every other day for a adult)

they always beg..in that way u are helping him know when he\'s full..turtles aren\'t smart enough to know when they had enough food!

If the turt is hungry, it will eat the pellets. It\'s begging you for more \"treats\". It\'s 2 years old? Give it just pellets for a few days; bet it will eat them!

I\'ll echo Dixieee\'s question: when does a turtle classify as an adult? Based on size or age?

i read they are adult around 1 year old...that\'s when u start feed them every other day..(that\'s for the pellets)i think u can leave lettuce(not iceburg, nothing good in that one) in the tank all the time..it\'s like us,u can eat as much veggies as u want without gain fat.not to worries if the turtle don\'t eat it,they more carnivorous when they young.the amount of pellets should be the size of the head(not the neck)and the begging, they all doing it...:)

Dixieee, thankfully I have little experience in determining if a turtle is dead. In my case (using mostly water with a basking ramp), if the turtle stays at the bottom of the tank, in the same spot, for over a day - it\'s probably dead. When picked up, the feet and head hang limply; no movement at all. Eyes shut.

If a turtle in that shape isn\'t dead, it will be soon. And (sorry!) I\'ve only consulted a vet once for a turtle. Didn\'t help - but I\'ve learned since that it\'s hard to help a baby turtle in extreme distress. Too small, too young, and we usually notice after it\'s too late. Older/larger turtles have a better chance - and can usually be helped by natural remedies or over-the-counter items (eye drops, etc).

Hope your turtle is OK?!

When my baby RES died ...he smelled bad ...he was limp for the first few days, eyes were closed..i knew he was dead, but just didn;\'t want to believe it....He then became cold and stiff ....i then had to bury him

(i had a strange setup then ...i had them in a 10 gallon tank w/ just a water dish because they were so small and they were an unexpected gift from my sister)

Dixieee, I don\'t know if some turtles float when they are dead. I\'m not an expert....know more about soft shell and eye disease than turt death.

I\'m sure, after a few days, the limp condition I described will change to rigidity - and (as prior post) there will be a smell.

If your turtle is floating in water, not moving, head down, and you haven\'t seen it come up for air......I\'d remove it from the tank and check for any signs of life.

I really hope your turt is OK! However, if you have more than one in the tank, get the healthy turtle into a new environment.

Oh Dixieee! I\'m so sorry! Look at me, I leave for a few days, and look what happens! How\'s Greeny doing? Is she okay? I hope you feel better and come talk about it again soon.

Your loyal and caring friend,
Kim
