Re: age?

Size doesn\'t necessarily equal age. I\'d say they were pretty young if they are only an inch. Definately less than a year. I don\'t give mine cuttlebone for calcium, but they have always had nice, hard shells. I know they sell turtle blocks that contain calcium and dissolve in the water. I don\'t k...

RESs tend to be a bit destructive. Mine are always uprooting their plants and knocking loose their heater. There isn\'t really much you can do about that. I do have plants that are fixed to rocks (you can buy them that way in pet stores). My two RESs try to climb up the glass when they are begging f...

They absolutely cannot cohabitat!!!! I made that mistake and my american green tree frog ended up being a gourmet treat! I would be more worried about the RES eating the frog, not the other way around :)

I travel frequently with my turtles. They stay in a cool whip dish with a moisten cloth until i can get them to where we are going. I usually don\'t travel further than an hour with them though. The turts don\'t seem to mind. They acutally kinda like going in the car I think! Hope this helps!

Do you have a female and a male? As part of their mating ritual, the male flaunts his claws in front of the female. Maybe this is what you saw.

I wouldn\'t be too worried unless you see them get really agressive and biting and stuff....

Cooked meat is fine for turtles to eat. Its the raw meat that you have to be careful of. Good luck. BTW...I have two red ear sliders, and one has grown a lot, but the other one has stayed small. I wouldn\'t worry too much, before too long, you\'ll be wishing they hadn\'t grown at all :)

Re: Fighting question

You might have to separate the two of them, but that can get expensive having two tanks. Depending on the size of your tank, I have seen people put a divider with holes in it in the tank. The holes insure that you would only need one filter/heater. You\'d have to buy a second basking lamp though

I use one of those gravel suction things to suck out most of the water and then use it to vaccum the gravel too. I change rocks about once per month. Not using any gravel is a good option because gravel traps a lot of dirt. Getting a really good filter will help with the cleaning. I wish I had a 100...

I have seen tanks that have a plexi glass divider that has water on one side and sand on the other. You can attach the divider using silicon. Turtles do shed when they grow. If its an RES or a semi-aquatic turtle, you probably won\'t see it shed because the skin comes off in such small pieces.

The shell does grow with the turtle though.

I hope this kinda helps! :)

Either would be a suitable pet if you and your son are ready for the responsiblity. I have two sliders, the main thing that you have to be watchful of is the water quality and temperature. If either are not good, there can be problems. I don\'t know much about box turtles, but sliders generally get ...

Undertank heaters are usually pretty cheap. One for a ten gallon tank was like $10. They don\'t work all that well for heating water though. All it is basically is a heating pad with a sticky side so it can stick under the tank. I found a little heater at walmart for $7. Its made of a temperature re...
