Re: HELP.....confused on lighting

As far as light goes, you need a basking lamp and a UV light if you turtles aren\'t exposed to natural sunlight. Both lights you have are basking lights. They provide the visible spectrum of light, but not the ultraviolet (UV) light needed. You will have to by a special light bulb to provide suffici...

My tutles are slowly out growing their tank, but I don\'t have the room or money to buy a decent sized tank. Do any of you have experience building a basking area outside of the tank? I\'m trying to maximize space until I can upgrade.

How old are they? Its really hard to sex red ear sliders when they are young. My are about a year or so old, and I still can\'t really tell. I have a good guess, but I\'m not completely sure. Some of the more senior members will be able to tell you how to sex them a bit better than i\'d be able to.

Bolgna is lunch meat, everyone has heard of it....maybe Baloney? Same thing, the real spelling is bolgna. I would consider restricting the turtles bolgna. Its probably high in fats and sodium. I would stick to stuff like cooked chicken or beef. I use feeder fish as treats and pellets as a staple foo...

Basking temp should be around 90*, while the water temp in the upper 70s to lower 80s. 80* is the guideline. Also, turtles really need UVA and UVB light. I know one is for vitamin D synthesis and I forget what the other is for. But, they definately need both. I hope this helps!

What kind of turtle is it or do you even know? If its semi aquatic, you\'ll need a dry areaa with a basking lamp and water deep enough so that it can right itself if it gets turned over on its back. Young turtles eat meat. Try tuna or cooked chicken. Also feed them dry pellets. You\'ll definately ne...

It could be some type of algae or something. I wouldn\'t use an algicide though, they can be bad for the turtles. Do you use a filter in the water? If not, it may remedy the problem. Also, you can buy some water treatment chemicals from the pet store, just ask and make sure that they are okay for tu...

Be careful about leaving your tutles in sunlight. It can get really hot really fast. Also, most windows filter out UV-A and UV-B light that your tutles needs. You would probably be better off getting a light bulb that has both. They\'re kinda expenisive, but they last about a year.
