Re: whitening shell!!!

This \"full spectrum\" light that you recently bought him--does it say that it provides UVB rays? If it doesn`t, then he`s still not getting the UVB his shell needs. (Full spectrum does not necessarily provide these rays.) I agree about taking him to a vet. And I would take those rocks with the red ...

Re: white cottony stuff

If it`s shedding, I would allow it to come off on its own, just keep the water clean. If you think it`s a fungus, you could try a salt bath: First, rinse the turtle and use a q-tip to remove any visible fungus before soaking. Add half a tablespoon (1 and a half teaspoons) of aquarium salt (NOT table...

What does the skin underneath (the new skin) look like--is it red, raw, or otherwise abnormal? Is it all over--head, neck, legs, tail, etc.)? The white stuff--is it kind of stringy, translucent and do you really notice it in the water but not when he`s out of it? If so, he could just be shedding his...

If her eyes are healthy looking now, I wouldn`t suspect a vit. A deficiency. In any case, I wouldn`t give her a vitamin A supplement--Vit. Better to use smooth river rocks larger than the turtle`s head so they cannot be eaten. There is always the possibility that the turtle could become impacted, which will require a vet. It`s better to eliminate potential problems rather than giving them the chance to occur. Some people say that when ...

You know those Rubbermaid storage containers (for clothes, toys, etc.) you can buy at places like Walmart? That`s what people are talking about. To the contrary, beheading a turtle is not a humane way to put it out of it`s misery! Please don`t do it! I don`t know where you are, but call you State Fish and Wildlife Service and find out about a rehabber or ask them what else to do. If you can`t get satisfaction, call a vet and explain you how ...

You need to provide a basking light for warmth, yes, but if it only gives off UVA rays, you also need to get a UVB light and use them together. (There are also combination UVA/UVB lights called mercury vapor lights; they are expensive, but I`ve been told they work well.)

Basking area air temp. should be around 88-90 degrees F (about 10 degrees warmer than the water). The UVB light...

Try smooth river rocks (get them at Walmart, Home Depot, etc.). Make sure they`re larger than your turtle`s head so he can`t swallow them if he tries to eat them.

What is this \"mulch\" they are digging under? If you mean gravel, better to take it out and use smooth river rocks larger than their heads so they won`t be tempted to eat it. How long has your turtle been like this? It sounds like your turtle has either an eye infection, a Vitamin A deficiency or both. Are his eyes covered with any white cottony stuff? Is your turtle a hatchling? Hatchlings should be fed daily. There are automatic feeders for fish that people have used for turtles. Maybe you`d want to check into getting one. If your turtle is an adult, he doesn`t need to eat every day. You could put some aquarium plants and feeder fish in the tank...

How big/old are they? If they`re babies I don`t think it would be good to let them hibernate outside the first year. Jude`s right--they don`t need \"friends.\" RES are territorial and can get agressive if they don`t have enough space, so if you got another one, you would eventually have to get a really big tank, especially if one or both were females.
