Re: Tiny (baby RES) gasping/gagging...HELP!

Please take her to see a veterinarian. This kind of behavior is synonymous with respiratory infections. Is she swimming lopsided in the water or out basking excessively? These are indicators that the problem could be far along. In the meantime, raise the water temp to 85 degrees and keep her warm. W...

Re: Big question

I\'m glad to hear my turtles aren\'t the only ones with a soft spot above their tails. I was pretty worried. I\'m still planning on taking them in to a herp vet for a wellness check-up just to make sure everything else is okay.

Re: someone answer this has been up for about 5 days already

Excellent info by Krazy4Kritterz who is a moderator of another turtle forum. Hatchlings should each once each day, only as much as he\'ll consume in about 15 minutes. As he grows, you can reduce feedings to every other day. Full grown adults can eat 2-3 times per week. Vegetation should always be av...

Re: appreciate it if you tell me what you know !!! ???

You should be able to find cuttlebone in the bird section of any Petsmart or Petco.
This is what is looks like:

http://www.petdiscounters.com/small_ani ... ebone.html

and it contains about 85% Calcium Carbonate, so it\'s really good for shell health.

My turtles are now about 2-1/4 inches across the shell... I\'m thinking it might be time to go to feeding every other day. Any ideas? Thanks

You may notice all the responses I have posted to questions on the board... I hate seeing posts with zero replies, so I answered quite a few. Re: baby with respitory problems

This is taken from the First Aid section of this site: A good prevention technique is to make sure that the temperature in the tank is not too low. Raise the temperature up a little, this will help your turtle\'s immune system become more active. Colds, respiratory infections, and pneumonia seem to ...

Re: RES not eating pellets

More info would help out here, like what you\'re setup is like. Is everything proper for a water turtle? Temperatures, UV lighting, etc. Take a look at the care sheets on this page to make sure that it\'s not something in his environment that might be causing his lack of appetite.

Re: appreciate it if you tell me what you know !!! ???

I\'d get a cuttlebone or calcuim block (basically the same thing) and put it in the tank with them. Turtles will sometimes chomp on it. It\'s supposed to help their shell stay hard, but in addition to that you might get some calcium powder and dredge their food through it so that they get some in th...

Re: HELP PLEASE TURTLE IS VERY SICK

Hi there, I\'m not an expert, but I\'d make sure all your parameters are correct, such as water temp (78-82) basking area, (85degrees), is their water clean? Are they getting plenty of UV light, Vit. A, calcium, and other vit\'s and minerals? If all of this sounds normal for you, then I\'d continue ...

We handle our turtles near their feeding time. My husband actually likes to stroke their heads as their snapping up their pellets and veggies. I don\'t see why you can\'t handle them. I\'d just make sure not to overdo it. Have fun!

Sounds like you have normal RES to me. From what I\'ve researched on the internet, it tends to be normal (albeit disgusting) to eat their own feces. Digging can be pretty normal as is the whole mating ritual deal. Sounds like you have happy, healthy RES!

Hi there, Could you describe the what the shedding/fungus looks like? They are still small, about 2 inches across. However, I have notic...

I have never heard of this. I would definitely get a UV light. They need this to utilize calcuim and Vit D. Serious health problems can arise if you don\'t get one. Take a look at the care sheet on this site for water turtles.

I\'d remove the gravel and put larger sized stones in there that they can\'t eat. Some people say that as long as the gravel is small enough to pass through their intestinal tract that they\'ll be okay, but I wouldn\'t chance it. There\'s always a chance of impaction. I\'d go with a bare bottom or l...

Algae can be tough. Frequent water changes help out a lot. If you have the tank near a window and sunlight you\'d want to move it away. Anyway you can reduce the lighting in the tank without compromising the health of your turtles would also help the situation a lot. you can get one of those scrub b...

Some of you mention dragging foods through calcium powders or soaking in liquid vitamen supplements... if you feed the turtles in water, how are you avoiding having these things dissolve/dissipate in the water?
