2 yr old Mississipi Map and setup free to good home

I have a Mississippi Map turtle that is 2 yrs old. It is one of 3 that I purchased as hatchlings and is the smallest of the three. I believe it is a male, so it should not get too large. I had to make a whole new setup for it, as the others were out competing him for food, and were biting him. I can...

I am looking into giving it to a local pet store. There are a few non-chain stores in the area that might be willing to put it in one of their tanks until it is big enough for them to sell.

res needs home

My sister's husband recently received a res as a birthday gift. The giver of the gift did not take into account the fact that this 2 inch adorable turtle would grow and need more than just the small "death bowl" it came in. My sister asked me to take it, but I already have 2 missippi maps that can't...

Be careful if you put on a cover. With underwater heaters and heat lamps you should NOT use a glass or plexi cover. Those types of covers will prevent the heat from escaping and might make the water get too hot. You don\'t want to cook your turts!

Re: Moving Turtles from Inside to Outside??

I don\'t have a pond, but I know someone who does. I have learned from him that you need to make sure of a few things. You need to make sure that the pond is deep enough so there is water below the \"freeze line\" or else the entire pond will freeze and your turtles would probably die. You also need...

Re: Can indoor turtles go outdoors all year?

What area of the country do you live in? Unless you live in a warm area, mississippi maps won\'t be able to overwinter. I have, however, heard of people who\'ve left res out in the winter in southern NY, and they usually survive. If the \"bog\" is going to be above the ground, you need to make sure ...

I have heard many people on this board express their anger at people who sell turtles and \"Death Bowls\". Check that the basking temp is between 85-90 degrees. If the basking temp is too cold, there is no reason for your turtle to go up there.

WHat is your water temp?

I have read on some sites that it is actually better to use chlorinated tap water when filling your tank to help to kill bacteria that cause shell rot. I read it on the site I bought my turts from which is a major turtle farm in FL.

I would suggest river rock. Anything that is larger than the mouth of the turtle will take away the risk of it eating the substrate. Larger rocks also make it easier to keep the bottom of the tank clean. I bought mine at a \"dollar\" store, and just loosly put them on the bottom.

As far as I know UVB lights are important for all turtles. WIthout it they can not effectively metabolize calcium, and thus, can have problems with their shells and bones. I ordered a strip light from Drsfosterandsmith.com It was about $30, and it included a bulb. You should replace the bulb once a ...

In order to get it to eat you can also try raising the water temp a bit. Speeding up the metabolism worked when my eastern painted hatchling was not eating.
