Re: red ear slider question

I\'ve put a hatchling with a 6 month old in the same tank and the little one learned from the bigger one. They got along fine but I did have to feed the hatchling separately cuz the older one doesn\'t know when to stop eating. :)

Re: Baby Turtle Skin Peeling Help Please!

I\'ve heard that turtles can get burned from too much basking. Normally, a turtle will return to cool off in the water if it\'s too warm, but some might stay under the lamp a bit too long.
Did you consider that your turtle might be shedding skin naturally, it happens a lot.

Re: baby red ear slider\'s health

Baby turtles need time to adjust to their new surroundings.
Leave your RES alone for a while and once it feels comfortable it will emerge on its own to eat. And leave more meat (mine loves bits of cooked chicken) in the tank, it won\'t be very interested in veggies.

Re: Baby Turtle Skin Peeling Help Please!

I would suggest isolating Viper, it sounds like the other turtles are bullying the little one.
I think they have medicine/lotion to help it heal.

Theoretically, the RES won\'t eat your other animals since they seem to be full grown turtles, meaning they\'re no longer carniverous.

It doesn\'t sound normal to me.
There are ointments/lotions that can help the shell regrow, and of course a healthy diet and plenty of UV light will help the shell condition improve.

turtles stretch and yawn all the time, but if it does this every few seconds then you might have a problem. If it shrugs its shoulders everytime its mouth opens it could be sick.

Ponds are great IF you have the resources for it. But most of us don\'t, and aquariums are sufficient for raising RESs as pets. And even if you did have a pond, how would you keep it heated when the water temp drops to 30 degrees at night in the winter?

Yeah, that\'s an awesome tank. Do you think it\'s OK if I use a 50 Gallon tank for 2 RES? It probably won\'t have as much stuff as Joe does. I\'ll have a basking area on one side and a shallow resting area on the other side with some fake plants and stones along the bottom. Oh, and a filter and heat...

Respiratory Problems?

Hi guys, Stinky, my little (1.5 inch) RES seems to have a hard time breathing. It\'s spending more time on the basking rock than it used to and has not been eating for the past week or so. I hear a clicking sound coming from its abdomen and the clicking is enough to make the surrounding water vibrat...

you\'ll need a lot more water, at least as deep as your turtle is long. And you\'re better off turning your bowl upside-down to use as a basking area than a water bowl.

If the turtle is young, the lack of water may have dried it out. And it\'s easy for a turtle to be scared if you move it around too much.

The soft shell may be due to a lack of calcium or UV rays, both of which are imporant for a healthy turtle.

From what I\'ve read, RES and Painted get along just fine, as long as they\'re the same size so no one gets picked on. Not sure about fish, though. Bigger turtles will eat the fish.

My little RES\'s are beginging to get light brown patches on their shells, and is more apparent when the shell is dry. I think styrofoam becomes toxic after a while. You should try using cork instead, it\'s probably better since it\'s more natural and is still perfectly boyant.

The water level can be infinitly deep I think. BUT you should have a shallow level or at least a sloped area so that they can sleep and stick their noses up easily for air. They should have a shallow sleeping area that\'s as deep as your turtles are long.

Yes they stress, when they aren\'t used to being in an environment they\'ll hide and sleep a lot w/o eating for a while until they get used to their new home, regardless of how yummy the food is. They\'ll also stress if they\'re not used to being handled and you pick them up too much.
