Turtles identify their food by smell. You probably don't smell like what yours eats.
I usually hand-feed my RES. If I have just washed my hands and they smell of soap, she won't take the food. She takes one sniff and pulls her head in.

My RES likes the cave that was formed by the slightlly submerged platform used for her to climb out of the tank and onto her basking rocks. She hangs out there all morning after she eats. Sometimes she sleeps there at night.

I have the Fluval 404 for a 50 gal tank and after initial difficulty (hole in intake tube?) it's been great for keeping the water crystal clear.
