The picture of your adorable "HOUDINI TURT" is very clear! He looks very happy.
We have all learned a lesson from your Michelangelo & will keep a watchful eye on our "turts".
Thanks for sharing.

A captive RES will be more susceptible to predators, starvation and disease. They are not conditioned for a harsher environment and are dependent on people for its feeding and safety. A released captive must compete against a native turtle population, could disrupt an ecosystem and may possibly intr...

So glad that you found your turtle a few weeks ago after he escaped your kiddie pool. For all the turtle owners out there, please be aware birds do go after turtles so never leave them alone if they're not in an enclosed area.

answers to please help

The water level should be at least as deep as the turtle is long, preferably sveral times this measure. Please let the water stand for 48hrs before using. There must be some sort of platform for basking & something to swim up to & just lean on. Your new "turts" will need a couple of days for adjustm...

my son

Please do talk to your son's teacher as it will certainly be very unhealthy to keep "turts" in a small container & make certain she understands that these cuties also need lighting. Thanks for your concern. Keep us posted!!!

filter

I use Fluval filter (purchased from Petsmart) as it can be used horizontily with suction cups that come with it. There are different ones according to the size of your tank. You need to rinse out sponge filter weekly but my water has been clear. I usually do not feed my RES in tank but take him out ...

moss on shell

Does anyone know what I can use to clean my RES's shell as he has algae or moss on it ?
I have used cotton balls to rub off some of it but it accumulates daily. I do use distilled water in his filtered tank.
Thanks! :)

sleep

Turtles do close their eyes & sleep at night. My little guy ususally sleeps in same spot @ night with his head out of the water against his floating dock Give him a chance to get use to his surroundings. My suggestion is to pick up a book about RES or read all about their behaviors on various turtle...

shedding of skin/shell

It is definately normal & my 2yr. RES is doing exactly the same thing now...I find pieces of green shell in the tank & have seen the skin shedding too at the same time. I have to say that I can see that he is getting bigger also. My "Petey' is very healthy, being very active as usual. :)

sex of turtle

When I purchased my RES turtles, I was told that you can tell the sex of the turtles by looking at their nails & tail. Girls-short nails/short tail & Boys-long nails/tail. I named my turtles according to this theory. Has anyone heard this?

When it comes to feeding bananas & strawberries to turtles, how much do you give them? Do you leave cut up pieces of fruit or what?

Poops!

I always place my 1 yr slider in separate quarters to feed & after he poops I put him back in his tank so I monitor both & keep his tank clean. The last week or so I have not seen any poops in his aquarium. He is acting normal otherwise. Is this something I should worry about? Is there anything I co...

question

Does anyone know if red-ear sliders can HEAR?
My turtle \"Petey\" will bask in his tank but jumps into the water when someone passes the room & I\'m not sure if he hears someone or sees the person.
