nutrients by water?

Just a thought - if you dissolve the turtle pellets in water - then the turtle is in that water, does he automatically get his food by swallowing the water? ???? (Container without a filter, etc.) My new guy will not eat out of the 10 gallon tank. (trying to keep the tank cleaner). If I put him back...

feeder fish

I have yet to try feeder fish. I have a 10 gallon with 2 res. How many do you buy? I have the tank half filled with water - Is that ok to put these fish into? Do they just swim around until they get eaten? I don't know if my daugther would appreciate that...

kinda new owner

I did the same thing. My husband and daughter came home with two from a flea market. I first thought to give them away but they grew on me. Now they are my turtles. But I had them for a few months with the very basics. I honestly didn't want to spend the $ because buying them like that - who knew ho...

what to do

This probably happens to new turtle owners. I gave chicken to my 1 year old RES and realized - just as I drop it in that it might be too big. Scared me. I tried to pull it out. I could not believe what a jaw grip this little guy had. I had to let go or maybe rip his head off. I hoped for the best. B...

Re: Advice needed!

Maybe that\'s why mine are getting along. The new one has a goldish/brown strip behind its ear and the shell color is more bluegreen. The older one has the red and shell color is more yellowgreen. I guess we did get lucky.

Re: Advice needed!

The same thing happened to me. We started out with two, one died. We recently got another one,(almost a year later) maybe I was just lucky but the two are getting along just fine. After the new one\'s adjustment they are basking together on the rocks, sometimes sitting on top of each other. I do hav...

Re: Tank upgrade!!!

I switched two baby res into a 10 gallon- the new one took about a week to get used to it. He did not eat or bask much. After a week he started eating and basking. He sleeps in the corner behind the filter, I guess he feels safe there. The other one we\'ve had since last summer- he adjusted in about...

Re: submersible heater

Since I\'ve taken away the guard they don\'t seem to be bothering the heater. I\'ll keep an eye on them, though. Thanks!

Re: helpppppppppp!!!!!!!

That brings me to another question. I got a free sample of Easy Balance it supposed to \"eliminate frequent water changes\" it maintains ph levels and other things. Another thing I have is -Aqua Safe which neutralizes the chlorine and other metals \"harmful to fish\". It reads like both do different...

Re: helpppppppppp!!!!!!!

My new RES has problems with his eyes, I bought Repti-Turtle eye drops at Petsmart or Petco (I forgot which). Its just a saline solution with other things in it. It helps my turtle eyes -I use it almost daily and he does open his eyes. It seems to work as long as I use it. I think my turtle is sensi...

Re: submersible heater

I ended up taking the gutter guard away. The tank looks better without it and the turtles seem fine. Thanks for your input. This site has been a great help.

submersible heater

I have a submersible heater- should it be blocked off from the turtles? I have two small RES. I read on an older post that you can cover it with rocks? I have a piece of plastic gutter guard around it, but the turtles dig underneath and sit on top of the heater anyway. Is this ok? I don\'t want them...

Re: age?

As I mentioned before my husband and 6 year old daughter came home with them from a flea market. We know Nothing! about turtles and I was trying to find someone to take them. I did some research and decided it\'s alot of work especially when they got bigger. By the time I found someone to take them ...

Re: age?

He is actually wonderful, he eats (like a pig, if I let him), swims basks, comes up to look at me and lets me pet his head. Seems very happy/healthy.The new one is the one I\'m concerned about. He is sleeping alot- hasn\'t eaten in three days. He ate about two or three days after we brought him home...

age?

My husband and daughter came home with two sliders last July from a flea market. Both hibernated - one made it through, one didn\'t. About three weeks ago, they went back to the market and picked up another RES. My questions: 1. How often do you give them the cuttlebone for calcium? 2. They are smal...

heater size

What a great site! Spending much too much time reading old posts. Not getting much done these days between learning and watching my new turtles. I read that you should get a filter larger than tank size - does that apply to the heater too? I have 2 (small) RES in a 10 gallon - the water level is abo...
