Sorry, I guess I could have been a bit clearer on what I was asking... My concern has more to do with the salmonella that ends up living in the tank water and incidental contact with the water itself, more than direct contact with the turtle. I'm not trying to rid my turtle of salmonella, just his t...

UV sterilizer on a turtle tank = no salmonella?

I know UV sterilizers are used for killing algae, parasites, and bacteria in fw and sw tanks. But, would one be effective at killing salmonella in a turtle tank? Does anyone use one on their turtle tank?

Dissolved organic matter (oils from turtles / fish) can cause bubbles like you've described. I've never had an ongoing problem with them, but my filter doesn't exactly produce a whole lot of surface disruption. The surface agitation is what helps the bubbles form. The only way to readily get rid of ...

Hello... a hatchling needs shallow water to prevent it from drowning, which can happen if the water is too deep and it becomes exhausted. Your hatchling will need to build up its strength and swimming skills before giving it a deeper area to swim. How hard is it to get up on the basking spot? Again,...

One of my turtles had a great treat today, as one of the two snails was picked clean out of its shell. The second one must have found someplace to hide--I don\'t see any part of it anywhere.

One of my turtles is older than the others, too, and like jackietwo\'s situation, eats faster than the younger ones. Turtles and Snails -- Adjustment Period Needed?

How have those of you with snails in with your turtles managed to get the snails to survive? After reading through the posts on the board and seeing that there\'s at least a couple of people that have snails in with their turtles, I decided I\'d give it a try and bought two gold mystery snails last ...

I\'d give your turtle the entire wax worm. There\'s not really any way to cut up a wax worm like you would an earthworm. Wax worms are more or less all goo inside and not as solid as an earthworm. If the wax worms are too big for your turtle, he (or she) will bite into it and use his front claws to ...

I\'ve used that food too... it does say 2 hours (!), but I never give my turtles that much food at one time. I usually feed them as much as they can eat in 2 - 3 minutes twice a day. Variety is good for your turtle, just like it is for anything else.

I\'ve fed my turtles a lot of different things over the years--crickets, house flies, guppies, freeze-dried tubifex worms, krill, Reptomin, Jurassi-diet, etc. I\'ve never had a problem with them being picky eaters. I\'ve been lucky in that sense, I suppose. Their main diet is Reptomin, though.

Re: Found a wild turtle & need help with feeding

If it appears healthy, based on your past experiences with turtles, there should be no problem putting it back in the wild. The longer you keep it though, the harder the transition back into the wild will be for it. If you want to keep it and can provide a good home for it, it is possible to take in...

I agree with the above suggestions. I\'ve moved my turtles many times from college to home, too, and from house to house as I\'ve moved around. I\'ve usually gone the plastic bucket route, which keeps the top wide open. But, since your RES is 16 years old, it\'s probably too big for a plastic bucket...

I hope you have a good lid for your tank if you decide to keep the bullfrog. It will jump high enough to hit the lid and knock it around. You might end up with a bullfrog running around your house! :)

Re: Feeder Fish

Comets are a type of goldfish. Depending on how big your turtle is, and how big the fish are, they may or may not be ok. There\'s nothing wrong with the fish, but if these fish are large compared to the size of your turtle\'s mouth, it\'ll be a very messy feeding. When I get feeder fish, I typically...

Re: How could my turtles died that quick

In nearly every place that I\'ve lived, it is against the law to release pets into the wild. If you\'re from an area where red ear sliders are native, it would still typically be considered a bad idea. There\'s all kinds of ecological reasons, but I\'ll stick to the ones specific to a pet. Any pet g...

When you say you put her in water, do you mean the outdoor pond or someplace inside? 3 hours... yikes! That\'s a long time... Buy a gravel vacuum (or build your own) like the others said. It\'ll save you a ton of time, and you won\'t have to physically handle all of the gravel, nor completely disassemble your tank (which it sounds like you\'re doing). I spend less than a 1/2 hour cl...

Dump and fill works well for smaller tanks, but I\'m not sure I\'d want to go through all that for a 30 gallon tank. Re: my tank will not stay clean

You should consider putting gravel in the bottom of your tank. Right now, there\'s nowhere for any of the waste to settle, so it constantly gets stirred up when your turtles swim around. Also, by not having any gravel in the bottom, you\'re limiting the biological processes that help break down the ...

If you have any appropriately sized, empty clay flower pots around the house, you could turn one of those upside down, too. Just make sure that the water level is right so your turtle can get on top of it easily, yet still have a dry place to hang out.

Re: drift wood out of a lake

In the past, I\'ve always boiled driftwood, which will help kill a lot of things on it that you probably don\'t want in your tank. It\'ll also get out the tanins--that brown color that comes out of the wood and stains your water. When you think you\'ve boiled it enough, boil it some more. If you don...
