Re: Feeder Fish

Might try small snails. As the turts get bigger they learn to eat them and no-one gets attached to them. Also, they really help keep the tank clean until they become a meal!

No wonder you have problems getting turtles! My brother lived in Baharain for a time; I\'m guessing the prices run high in both countries. Bet you don\'t have lots of need for a tank heater - except at night?

Re: Filter?

If you have a strong filter and the babies get caught on/in the intake - they could drown. I have an older filter, and used the strainer end (for fish)until my 3 got too big for the suction to be a problem.

What type filter do you have? I recommend turning it off until you get a good solution.

I\'ve not been successful force-feeding a turtle. Do you know what Mint was fed before he came to you? I\'d try that first, if you haven\'t already. Do you feed Mint in the water (food and turtle are in the water)? If not, try that - it might stimulate a natural reaction to eat. Maybe a bit of Romai...

I honestly don\'t know. The two RES I had when younger were fine together; I\'m wondering if part of the trick is letting them grow up together? Mine did, but I had to back off, sit down, and observe them from about 2 feet away. Now the RES will eat if I\'m within 6 inches - as long as my hand isn\'t over the tank. The other two are fine with anything that involves food.

Bjorn, don\'t know about stores in NZ, but many of our U.S. stores still have unknowledgable, myth perpetuating staff. Check out what they tell you before passing it on to customers - you\'ll learn a lot that way, and become the staff person everyone wants to consult.

Depends on the intake system. The poking the head out is the key. They come up for air, then back down. My 3 only sleep on the basking ramp or on top of a tall plant; if they slept on the bottom of the tank they\'d have to keep swimming up for air.
