RES diet variety

I was thinking of adding something more to my RES (Gary) than the Nutramin gammarus and occasional guppies. Specifically I was thinking salmon (cheap, and abundant). Is it ideal to use raw sushi-quality salmon or should I cook it bare (steam, boil). And after that should I leave the food bits floati...

Re: help - open mouth

My RES did that when I first got him...id be woken up in the middle of the night and he\'d be on his rock with his mouth gaped open and sounded like he was screaming, although it sounded more like a small cat meowing. Best thing to do is just make sure the temps are all right in the water and baskin...

Re: Fish in Turtle Pond

If your turtle has MBD (shell rot), get it to a vet immediately. The fact that he\'s not eating may be attributed to the shell rot, or the temperature. If the temp (water and basking spot) are too low (water should be 80-85, try to make basking spot 5-10 degrees hotter) then the turtle will think it...

Re: What do you do when your RES doesn\'t bask?

You would think that would help but he kicks and claws whenever he\'s touched inside the tank. I\'ve put him on the platform and he bolts back into the water, usually ending with a comical event of him smacking the glass and trying to swim thru it.

What do you do when your RES doesn\'t bask?

Recently I moved my RES into a 20 gallon tank and he never basks. I\'ve got the bulbs situated over the basking area and it is about 85-90 degrees, water is around 80-85. Theres a rock ramp leading up to it, so accessibility shouldn\'t be an issue. He just sits/stands under the basking platform away...

Re: Best Filter??

I have a 20-high filled about 13 gallons and I use 2 Duetto 100s. They help keep the water pretty clean. Also, putting some fish in there every now and then helps, as they go to work on the leftover foodbits and some of the algae

Re: how can you tell if your turtle may be obese?

Your turtle probably is not obese, he/she is just growing. As they grow they\'ll appear to get \"rounder\", meaning the plastrom may start to jut out slightly. If you think he/she is overeating, why not just feed less food/not as often. Besides, if a turtle isn\'t hungry, he won\'t eat.

RES hides all day

I recently moved my RES into a larger tank and now all day he sits under the basking platform in the shade (under water all day). He has access to the platform in two large rocks set up as a ramp. Water heater is set to 90, but the heater is ideally for a 10 gallon, so the water gets to about 80. At...

Re: RES\'s and UVB lights - a problem

I have the exact same problem. I recently moved my RES into a 20 gal. While the lights are on he will sit under his platform all day, and comes and moves around at night. I wouldn\'t worry about the shellrot quite yet. It takes alot to rot. Keep in mind the RES will stay healthy with optimal tempera...
