Yes they are over a year old, but I am still around. I don't have the pits still, but will be reinstalling them this year, so I will still have the same problem. Thanks for the ideas.

I have a problem

I have two sets of horseshoe pits in my back yard. I have a neighbor has some outdoor cats. These cats see these as four big giant litter boxes. I like cats, but I do not have any. The smell is so bad back there, that I can't throw shoes. I need to find a deterrent, so that I can enjoy the game. We ...

I have an underbed storage container set on top of the tank. They climb up for basking. The have plenty of room right now. I was just wondering about what size upgrade I will be getting in the future. I plan to build the basking area on top of the tank to maximize swimming space with the upgrade, ju...

Re: Turtle sleeping

Hey, I am in Ohio too. I ocassionally find my turtles sleeping a little while before I turn off the lights for the night too. Sometimes they are up and waiting for me in the morning. I think having a timer on the lights would probably help to establish a better schedule, but I haven\'t gotten one yet.

Maximized swimming space.........

Turtles are in a 55 gallon tank. I know the rule is 10 gallons for every inch of shell length. I assume this allows room for a basking area. Suppose there is no basking area in the 55 gallon swim area. Any suggestions on the minimum size tank for 2 adult males?

My smaller turtle outgrew the bigger one at first. Then the other one outgrew him. If they are eating and don\'t seem sick, I wouldn\'t worry too much. As long as they are growing. I assume that animals are like people. They come in all shapes and sizes.

Re: going on a vacation

If your turtle will eat live food, you could get a dozen guppies or so for them to chase. If your turtle eats plants, you could also maybe get some live plants to put in the tank for them to munch on. Check the pet store for small snails too.

I have read that it is not good to use algacide sp? in turtle tanks. I thought about getting it, but then when I read that it is not good for turtles, I decided to find another way to prevent algae growth.

Re: new turtle help

100 degrees is too hot. The basking area should be about 10 degrees higher than the water. The water should be in the mid 70\'s range with the basking area about mid 80\'s. I use a 75 watt bulb for the basking area and it keeps it around 85 degrees. Not eating is normal when an animal is stressed. T...

Aquaclear 300 is a pretty good filter for the price. You can get one for about $35 and I think it is rated for about 75 gallons. I have one in my 55 gallon. It keeps the tank very clean.

I chopped up chicken or fish and veggies. Mix it up and try to feed it that way. Slowly increase the veggies and decrease the meat. A lot of protein is not very good for them.

I think this person is talking about Tums antacid. I have never heard of this before. I have a hard time catching my turtles basking. Try putting a towel over the tank covering the basking area (so they can not see you come in the room)and see if that helps. It helps for my one turtle. (It is shy) M...

If the black stuff that you have is charcoal, it will eventually stop working. Go to the pet store and get some more. I put activated charcoal in a bag that I get at the pet supply store that is designed for charcoal. Charcoal will last a few months, but it needs to be changed every once in a while....

The basking area in my first tank was built about the same. I went to the pet store and bought aquarium sealant to attach the tubes to the bottom of the basking platform. Call the SPCA. They will come and evaluate the situation and take the animals if they are found to be in unfit condition. They will get the appropriate medical care for them and adopt them out if it is possible.

Depends on what you get. Sliders are about $15-$20. Land turtles are in the $60-$100 range. I don\'t see many others available in the pet stores. I am in the Northeast Ohio area.

In Ohio it is legal to sell them under 4 inches for educational purposes. The Petland by my house gets away with it by putting a sign on the tank that states \"For Educational Purposes Only\". They don\'t ask what you are going to do with it when selling them.

My turtles will try to eat anything they can fit into their mouths. They still try to take bites out of the river rock. I don\'t know of any way to stop them other than to not have it in the tank.

I use large smooth river rocks in my tank and scattered some large shells and smaller (but too big to eat)rocks at the bottom for them to dig around in. They love to rearrange the tank.
