Re: Bleached out shell?

It possibly could be air under the scutes or such as I don\'t think it could be a fungus or infection going on as the other 2 turts that share the tank are fine.... Thanks so much for your help!! Just needed a little reassurance..... call me an overprotective mom!!!

Bleached out shell?

I have a 3 inch turt with a discolored shell that has been slowly getting whiter and whiter.... almost like someone has dropped chlorine bleach on part of it! His shell is very hard and there are no loose scutes. He eats the Reptomin sticks every other day along with red leaf lettuce, few mealworms,...

Re: Best Filter??

Thanks so much for your replies!!!! I just purchased a 100 gallon aquarium today( MUCH larger than I anticipated but better for the turts). I will probably go with an Eheim or the Filstar XP3(2 since the tank is so big). Good filters are quite pricey but worth it in the long run. There is an EXCELLE...

Best Filter??

What is the best kind of filter to use? Doesn\'t the water level have to be real high in order for some of them to work? Just wanted to hear some personal preferences before I purchase one for about a 60-70 gallon aquarium for my little guys. Thanks!!

Re: slimy suction cups

I also get that on my suction cups holding my thermometer and floating bask platform... I think it is next to impossible to keep this build-up of slimy film off them. Pretty much anything kept underwater for any period of time can accumulate this but I really don\'t think it is anything to be concer...

Re: How old is your turtle/turtles

I have 3 RES but really have yet to name them as I don\'t know if they are boys or girls yet!!! One is definitely named M.B. which is short for Miracle Baby as he got caught under a large beach shell I had in the tank for decoration. When I found him I thought he was dead but eventually came around ...

I am so sorry you lost your little turtle friend. However he or she was very lucky to have someone like you care so much about him even if it was just for a very short time. Just like children some little critters are born a bit weaker and much more prone to illnesses....we just are not meant to und...

Mariza...Just wanted to let you know I love the quote you have listed at the bottom of your posts... If only all caretakers of the earth\'s creatures could abide by this there would be so much less suffering of these little souls.

Re: One Turtle Biting the Other\'s Leg!!

Just a little suggestion for a much larger tank until you can invest in a fancier glass tank which are quite quite expensive.... Rubbermaid makes large and deep storage bins which are wonderful for this type situation. They can be purchased at any Wal-mart or such type store.... This is what I am ke...

Re: Basking Area!!

I just happened upon a really neat one on the internet.... The site is Petdiscounters.com They have a unique floating island turtle platform that comes in 3 sizes. I got the medium one and my turtles love it!! It is really lightweight and a lot easier to deal with when cleaning your tank. It is made...

Is there ANY way to prevent algae??

Does anyone else have as much trouble as I do with algae growing on the objects in their turtle tank? Also what do you use to clean it off..... I scrub and scrub with a hard bristle brush with water and vinegar as I realize harsh cleansers should not be used... What do you do? Do the additives reall...

Aggressive Adult Sliders???

Is it true that when the little RES turtles grow to adult size they are more aggressive? Common sense dictates one pretty much needs to be careful when hand-feeding them but other than this does their temperment(sp?) stay essentially the same as when they are young? Thanks for anyones\' reply!

filter use on plastic tubs

Is it safe to use an aquaclear filter on a plastic tub enclosure or are these mostly kept clean by every 2-3 day water changes? What is the max size that could be used on a large tub? I have 3 baby RES and don\'t want to hurt them by too forceful of a filter... I have read horror stories about littl...

I just wrote in too about my little RES leaning to the Right...Just noticed it last night! He is the smallest of my 3 being only about 1.5 inches long but he is very healthy with a hard shell and an appetite that never quits!! He seems to be doing a bit better today and it is not as noticable. Altho...

I just noticed tonight the smallest of my 3 baby RES (he is about 1.5 inches) floats a bit crooked in the water favoring his Right side... I watched him closely and noticed his little left arm is a bit smaller than the right... It looks almost as if he could have been born that way as some humans ar...

$$$ Expensive Plastic Plants

Does anyone know if one can purchase nice sized plastic plants anywhere besides the ones seen in specialty aquarium stores? I don\'t want to buy the ones at Walmart as they are cheap and have wire in them that will rust eventually. I didn\'t know if any other plastic plants would be \"aquarium safe\...

I am from Louisiana so I am not sure if this would help or not......... I would strongly urge you to contact you states\' Wildlife and Fisheries Dept. These guys are very strict about this sort of thing down this way... There is a very very stiff fine for this. I hope this helps. Poor little things....

OOPS! I think I have been feeding my turtles too many mealworms (too often). I usually feed them those around 3 times a week and the pellets in between. I will definitely try the soaking method. Thanks so much!

Best Source of Calcium?

Hello! Brand new member here with a question. What is the best way to provide calcium to my 3 little 2-3 inch babies? I bought some of the powdered Calcium in a pet store but it will not adhere to the mealworms even if I moisten them first. It seems to all go to waste.... Do cuttlebones really work?...
