Red ear sliders need home....

I'm in Salt Lake City and I need to give up my turtles. 2 are red ear sliders, one is Yellow Bellied Cooter. Any interest, please reply. I also have a 50 and 60 gal tank for their housing

problem

I know of a company in Louisiana that had an accidental spill of salt water into a freshwater bayou. It is home to freshwater turtles so I am wondering how the saltwater will affect them. From my understanding, the concentration is low but is any salt water fatal to freshwater turtles? Thanks alot.

My female RES does this all the time. Except she does it early in the morning always around sun rise. After she blows the bubbles, she\'ll go to the surface and \"bite\" them.

no, no chlorine in the water. It\'s odd because sometimes he gets on the basking area and does nothing. Other times his legs and head flutters and he\'ll just go back into the water like nothing is wrong....maybe the basking area is too hot? He acts normal all other times and is very active. Eyes lo...

Just a question about my male RES. He is in his own 50 gal tank..water temp between 75-80. He is eating normal and acting normal except for when he basks. Recently, when he gets up on his basking area, his head does a spastic rotation type thing and then both his front legs scratch the top of his he...

Re: Is this Normal?

It sounds fine. The two turts I have in the same tank get along just fine. They have all sorts of sleeping positions. I used to worry because I have a hiding place for them in the bottom of the tank and only one way out. One would sleep under the hiding spot and the other just at the entrance. So I ...

I used to get the water out to clean it by buckets or cups at a time. I have what\'s called a Python. There\'s all sorts of brands of them, but they hook up to your sink and suck the water out and put it back in for you. This has saved me hours. Before I use it though, I scrub the rocks, clean the f...

most of the time it is not hissing. Mine do it when I take them out of the tank for feeding. It\'s air being forced out through their mouth when they retract their head into their shells. Isn\'t an aggressive action. There are times though, when I was brushing one of their shells, I believe he was h...

Re: Fighting RES and treating wound

I had this problem too. For me, getting a bigger tank did not help the biting, but it may for other turtles. I had two that had chunks taken out of their necks. I would take them out, let them dry completely, and apply neosporin to the wounds and let that soak in for about a half hour everyday. It s...

how long have you had them? If turtles are put in a new environment, like leaving the pet store and coming to a tank in your home, it takes a while for them to get used to it and start acting normal. When I got mine, took a week for them to start eating.

This is normal for newer tanks. It has to do with some sort of levels of bacteria or somethin like that. I\'m not sure on the specifics. But after a water change or so, the cloudiness should go away.

Everytime I ask someone this question, they recommend Fluval. I cannot stand Fluval. Way too expensive and I have never had any luck with them. I use a filter called Pondmaster. Hey edub, just a personal preference, but I don\'t like it in my tank. It grows way too much algae on it and is a pain to scrub to get everything off it. The piece I had seemed to always release small wood particles too dirtying the water. Are you using the drift wood as a main basking area?

I can\'t give you a 100% sure answer on that. From what I\'ve heard, the fluttering gets the female \"in the mood\" or puts her some sort of trance. Then the male proceeds to carry out his mating as we might expect he would. I am not for certain on that though. One of the males that I have has actua...

Male turtles do this as a mating ritual or a \"macho\" gesture. When I have my two males together, they both do what you described to each other and I believe it is a territorial thing. When my female is with one of the males, he flutters his front legs on the side of her head. It\'s just how they m...

The biggest advantage to taking them out of the tank, is water cleanliness. I used to feed mine inside the tank and just had to do water changes all the time. Feeding them in separate containers has really helped out the water clarity.
