Hey, I know it looks weird, but my turtles do that a lot. They are just molting. It's kind of like when a snake looses its skin. Everything will be ok! :D

I don't think it's fungus. My turtles never appear to be sick or infected while it is going on. Plus, it happens at around the same time they loose some scutes (shell tiles). It means they are growing. I think if it was fungus, your turtle would appear or act sickly.

Well, I find their scutes all over the tank, mostly in the rocks. It's a little translucent square that feels like a fingernail.

Turtles shed skin and scutes. That is normal. The skin you usually don't see unless the turtle is in water. Then it looks fairly gross but it really is harmless. The reason every one has shown pictures and had explainations on sheading is you had asked what that looks like, and the sheading of skin and scutes often occurs at the same time. It means your turtles are healthy.

It is definately normal & my 2yr. RES is doing exactly the same thing now...I find pieces of green shell in the tank & have seen the skin shedding too at the same time. I have to say that I can see that he is getting bigger also. My "Petey' is very healthy, being very active as usual. :)

Turtles do close their eyes & sleep at night. My little guy ususally sleeps in same spot @ night with his head out of the water against his floating dock
Give him a chance to get use to his surroundings. My suggestion is to pick up a book about RES or read all about their behaviors on various turtle links on the web. Eenjoy your "cutie".
