Hey everyone!....I am new to this board....I have a question if anyone want\'s to answer....I have a RES who is 2 1/2 years old...\"Godzilla\" is in a 55 Gallon tank and im looking to adopt another RES ...I was wondering what would be a better idea to either get a baby RES and nurse him up to the 55 Gallon tank like i Did w/ Godzilla, or should i get an older larger RES to be tankmates w/ Godzilla?

Looking at him now, it looks like he could use a little lovin....I do have a problem ....I live in New Jersey and it is illegal to sell turtles here .....Even Pennsylvania Banned selling RES... I am going to buy one on the Internet but i dont think you can choose what sex you get ....Anyone have any good info on buying turtles on the net? if not i think im going to go w/ turtlesale.com ......My RES is from VA......My sister and her husband brought 2 turtles back from vacation for my son ...they were told that they wouldnt get any bigger then a silver dollar ....Well, Woody died a few weeks later and ~~~Godzilla-Buzz-Michael Angelo-Rocky~~ (My son had the hardest time naming him...it took a year to finally deside on Godzilla) is a little over 4 Inches now...He is a very intelligent outgoing little guy..NOT A BITER ----As you can tell im rather obsessed w/ him....Any info would be helpful!!!

GET A GUY TURTLE! So if you introduce them into the same tank they wont kill eachother. And buy a seperate 10g for the baby.

i want him to be able to live happier out in the wild and i want to get a turtle that doesnt put himself to solitary confinement from all other turtles. We are letting fluffy go because we found 3 dead skunks and assorted animals in his enclosure that we keep him in. So im probably just going to et a nice cute turtle.....map or sunturtle.

I almost ordered hatchlings online, and agree that the sites make it sound easy. However, glad I waited and stumbled across a breeder - was able to see the hatchlings and pick mine based on strength and alertness (which in a hatchling is vital). Check your area for reptile shows - and good luck!

Thanks everyone for all your help! ......does anyone have a solution for keeping the green tint out of the tank? I have an under gravel AND regular Filter ...I use that turtle clean stuff once a week that reduces turtle poop....

The green tint looks bad, but won\'t bother the turtles. Is your tank right by a window? Sounds like an algae problem from too much light..... Does the water smell?

The water doesn\'t smell bad, but it does have an odor...Its not near the window, but I have lamps and lights...is there any way to reduce the green?
I was so frustrated i ended up taking out 80% of the water and refilling it (what a mess)..
Its still not crystal clear though ..Thanks for helping :)

so y\'all know, there should be 10 gallons of water for each inch of shell per turtle, so a 55 will still need to be upgraded later with even 1 res in it. dont let your turtle go, it will most likley die or create a turtle boom, and buying turtles under 4 inches anywhere in the us IS illegal, there are a bunch of sites that sell them under 4 inches but get away with it because they sell a product and the turtle comes free with it, i wouldnt support there almost illegal operations but if u cant buy them in your state then its alright, u cant tell if turtles are male or female until they get to about 5 inches. but it is not very likley for turtles to attack because of the same sex, this would mere likley happen as 2 males then 2 females, sorry about the long post

I wouldnt reccomend breeding res, they are too common and unless you are going to house them all or find good homes dont do it. Males can get along but quite often they get into fights with other males, males can also pick on the females to, if this happens you should seperate so hes not always trying to mate and stress her out. I would not reccomend a 10 gallon tank for even a hatchling, its just to small and you will have to upgrade in the future. Some breeders i highley reccomend if you are giong to buy turtles online are Shawn from www.turtle-town.com and www.turtlepimp.com . to find out more information on these breeders you can check out the good the bad and the ugly breeders listing on www.turtleforum.com . Also turtles do not need other turtles to live with, they will not get lonley and they are usually solitary animals in the wild. The only reason you see them all together basking is because thats what turtles do, bask. Unless you can house two adult res, which you CANT do in a 55 gallon than i wouldnt get them, females often need 120 gallons by themselfs, for more information i would check out www.austinsturtlepage.com . good luck.
