no heater, the water stays at 74 degrees when the lights are on and dips as low as 68 when lights are off...really i think it matches outside this way...have had no problems at all. I have upgraded my lights though to a 400 watt halide to support the vegitation growth
thanks

wow how does the temperature stay regulated so well. Is it from the heat coming from the lights? if i take the heater out of my turtle's aquarium it's temperature drops really fast. It's scary... So that's cool you can keep it regulated so well. Does your turtle bask a lot? because mine seems to like the water more than basking. I do catch her up there though, and her shell is normal so I don't worry about it. But seriously her tank is deep and she has much more swimming area than basking. just curious. _________________ 2 RES: Bowser Male 1.75yrs, Peach Female .75yrs

I have had this turtle for 5-years since the size of a silver dollar, she "knows" us well and basks for quite a few hours out of the day...she will however dart in if our dog walks by...so i guess it depends how comfortable they are.....the temps in the day stay warm because of the lights, i have the pond sitting on 2 pcs of foam insulation...I also have base board heating and the register is right next to it, so that may have a play in it. Turtles need to bask to digest their food or they can become ill with rotting food in their tummies....i say if she is eating i bet she is basking when your not looking

well i do know for sure that she basks, because we catch her all the time. She will bask if we are in the room and not moving around, we can talk and have the tv on and she is fine, but if we get up she will jump down.
Wow sounds like you have a spoiled little turtle also. We are looking into buying ours a 125 gal aquarium. REALLY soon, and she isn't even 6 months old. Do you think that ponds are better habitats than aquariums? or is both ok too?
does your turtle have an outside home in the summer time? if so do you ever get worried about critters going after him? (sorry for all the questions but i'm curious) _________________ 2 RES: Bowser Male 1.75yrs, Peach Female .75yrs

IT REALLY depends on your space that you have available. IMHO it is better to have more surface area than depth.....SO 125 is great as far as size BUT it in itself is still cramped up front to back.....can live for many years that way...but..I prefer the preformed ponds, they are easy to use...adaptable in any situation (they do need bracing). WE do actually move this set up on our deck in the summer BUT we also have another tank set up in the basement for cold/bad weather or vacation......PREDATORS are for sure a HUGE worry especially racoons they will eat your turtle. We use a simple chicken wire "gaurd" to stop this and only really put it up at night. We take him out daily and let him walk around the yard (supervised of coarse) for excercise....id like to build something somewhat more permanent and safe with a "walk out" spot where he could go out at will....but who knows......
knowledge is power!

| Looking really good, there, sirturtlemaster! Enviable setup for winter-quarters. Thanks for reminding people about the raccoon hazard! |

Well we've definitely thought about the space thing. We are being very picky and we are not going to buy an aquarium that is too deep. We want one that is pretty shallow and really wide and long. But i've really been thinking about the ponds and other habitats for turtles since I've been talking to you, and have seen and read about the different types of habitats on this forum. We are looking into buying a house, so when we have a more stable place to call home, we're going to really look into the different things we could do for her. I don't think I will ever be as brave as you, and let her live outside. I would just worry every night about the critters, and I would be so upset if something happened to her. But anyways it's nice to think of all the different things I could do for her, I know when she gets older she will want to bask more. So i'm trying to think of that now. _________________ 2 RES: Bowser Male 1.75yrs, Peach Female .75yrs
