One of the reasons I've been almost talked into getting gravel substrate is on account that I was told without it the smell of the turtles would be overwhelming, regardless of a good filter.

She gave me this talk of how the rocks absorb the bacteria, and bigger river rocks can't. And not having anything at all is even worse.

I'm a bit confused.

Pretty much straight BS, dude. Good filter and regular partial water changes and you're fine. I have never had a single problem. I've used either no substrate or big rocks.

I have gravel (pea) in my small pond, you can see it on the indoor ponds section....i like it, i have no smells...but i have not had a turtle in anything other than gravel bed ponds or tanks so cant speak the other route...but my water is clear and smell free...no carbon and really no filter, just a powerhead with sponge
