I have a fluval 405 filter on a 60 gallon tank for two of my red ear sliders for about 6 months now they have been in this set up and have been fine and now all of a sudden when i clean out their tank, after feeding them one day in the tank the water gets foggy and after a week its all green. Is there something wrong with my filter? its def pumping but it doesnt seem to be keeping the tank clean. Just wondering if its a filter problem or something else. Can someone help me with this? _________________ **Plasmik**

This may be a stupid question, but, have you cleaned the filter since the six months?, it sounds like the filter is no longer filtering anything smaller than a turtle pellet. _________________

yea i have been cleaning it out. I've changed the carbon and filter media as well and foam pads. I even cleaned out the tubes thorougly just to make sure there isnt any gunk stuck to clog it up.
I went to the pet store yesterday and they told me that its because of the lighting that the algae is forming, ive heard this before but i normally wont see the algae forming till after a week. This happened after a day and after i fed them that the water stayed foggy then the next day was green. and just got worse throughout the day and by the end of the week the water was completely green where you couldnt see anything. Ive never had this problem happen so quickly. The petstore said i should feed them outside the tank which im going to do from now on but was wondering if thats really the problem. Does algae form from the food? that just doesnt seem to be my problem. _________________ **Plasmik**

How big is the tank. It is highly unlikely that algae will grow that rapidly.
edit: sorry, saw that it is a 60 gallon tank from your initial post. |
