my turtle is snapping at me. it never did this before. he or she dont know yet is about 1 year old. today i took both my turtles out of the tank to clean it and the baby just starting snapping at me and latched on to the towel i had in my hand that i dry them off with. If any one knows why it is acting like this or how to stop him from doing this please reply.. i mean it was really aggressive.

You can't stop turtles from snapping at you.. just make sure you keep away from its mouth. some turtles are naturally aggressive.

As said, some turtles are just a bit more aggresive. Also it might be associating your finger with food.

There is a great movie on YouTube where this girl is sticking her finger in near a RES, and wiggling it away. And then SNAP! Bites right on. Smile

Nothing you should be too worried about though.

Oh I beg to differ!!! A RES turtle that I used to have bit me when he was about 3 inches big and latched on and would not let go!!! It hurt! A LOT!!! It is very similar to being bit by a small parrot. I would much advise you to keep your fingers away!

Oh yeah, getting bitten hurts. My girl who's of decent size, though not fully grown, bit me once. YOUCH!

well i guess i will keep my fingers away from its mouth. on you tube i watched res biteing this one girl and she kept putting her finger back so it could bite her again. i just dont know why my little one is starting to bite. she only does it when she is out of her tank, and i an holding her. i say her because my sammy is a male and he flirts with the little one.

Turtles don't like to be handled... they are definetly more look don't touch creatures... that would explain why he is trying to bite you.

Thats good that Sammy told you that he liked to be handeled. Turtles can take a while to warm up to people... if you must handel a turtle i suppose sammy would be the one... but until the other warms up or even IF the other one warms up... i would keep your fingers away from his mouth.

Yup its true, turtles snap and hurt if they get a real good bite of your finger. my friends would always ask if it hurt and i always let them bite on to my finger and hang off of it but i guess now that they have grown when i let them bite my finger she bit me so hard that she broke skin and i was bleeding pretty bad. it left the mark of their mouth. after that i wont let them snap at my fingers lol...
