Hello there, very nice to be here!
OK, here's the deal. I saw a kid walking around my street with three baby RES inside one of those teeny tiny lame-o plastic boxes and no water. He said that's where they live!!
I gave him $20 for them and did my best to rig up a temporary home for them: 15 gallon aquarium, basking dock, heating lamp etc. I know how large they get, so I expect to upgrade as necessary, perhaps to an outdoor Tupperware type tub -- is that ok in So Cal, where I live??
Two of these little guys -- they are under legal size, obviously -- seem healthy, happy and great, but one has a nasty eye infection. Anyways.... I took them all in to be checked by a reptile specialist veterinarian and he says the eye is dead. I conned him into prescribing an antibiotic anyways...
Boots, as my twin 2--year-olds call "him" is today swimming and seems fairly alert, but prefers to hang on the dock. I haven't seen "him" eat in the past couple of days even though I gave all the enticing treats I know of: bloodworms, a couple pieces of softened Science Diet catfood, which the other guys snarf up.
I was particularly bummed out that the vet said the eye is dead and the turtle is most likely to die. Or.... nastily enough ... the eye might rupture (!!!) and he "might" be ok.
Has ANYONE been through this before?? Obviously, at some point, if it seems hopeless, I'll poney up another $75 to have him put down so there's no suffering....
Help? Anyone?? |
