I found one of my baby red eared sliders floating in the pond today very lifeless. I quickly scooped him up and he moved just a little bit. I followed the care procedures for a drowned turtle because as I was checking him out those are the symptoms he seemed to have. Unfortunately I think I was too late but am not sure how to tell, he has not been moving for the past hour or so at all. Is there any way to tell or should I assume he has died? Please help. Also there is nothing in the pond that he could have gotten trapped under or hurt by so how could this happen? Any helpful advice is much appreciated.

Thank you for the kind offer, I purchased another one of the same size today so he would be the same size as his pond mate. I am sad but the new baby is much friendlier than the one that died and seems like he will be a happier turtle. |

I bought him from Petland in the MI mall. I have gotten turtles from there before and they have always been good healthy turtles. I will post pics of my new baby later.

turtles are very good swimmers, so if there was nothing to be caught under I would guess he probably did not drown. But baby turtles can get sick very fast and die very fast. Since the turtle was floating I am going to guess the turtle had a respiratory infection that got the worst of him. They are very very common in baby turtles. What is the water temp in the pond you are keeping them in. It really needs to be about 80f.

You might want to put some resting spots in your pond. I just checked out your pond pics. I used a similar setup until this year.
Babies are good swimmers but they need resting spots. I bought those long plastic plants used for lizards. They are about 3 feet tall. I took the base an d suction cups off and floated it on the top of the water. It gave them lots of hiding places, wich is natural behaviour in hatchlings, as well as good resting spots that were easy for them to climb on. _________________

thanks for your help guys, like I said I'm not sure he drowned but that is how it seemed. I do have the turtle log in there for a resting spot and the two plant shelves are only about an inch deep. I have a plan for their future home I posted in the pond section.
