I would personally look to get a PennPlax Cascade 700 or Cascade 1000.

They can be had at reasonable prices on eBay ( I picked up a 1000 for $70 ).

I have 4 Cascade filters, and have had no trouble with them at all.

There are other more popular brands (Fluval), but I have no practical experience with them and cannot speak to their performance and reliability - but I'm very confident you will find many people praising their performance, ease of use, reliability etc.

I have the Tetra Whisper in tank PF-20i 2 of them but I think I'm going to take them back to the store they take up to much room.

Where does the Cascade 700 go? On the floor? Is it big? I really don't have the room if it is big. Any other suggestions?

Yes, on the floor..

here are a pair of Cascade 1000's

here is the 500

Another option you can look at is the hang on back style filter. It takes up room behind the tank, and I have had some good results with this style on a smaller tank. I use a Cascade200 on a small 10gal tank I also keep.

A cascade 200 or 300 would be adequate for your 29gal setup, but may not be enough when you upgrade... You can always buy one today for the 29 gal and just get another at some point in the future for the larger tank

again, there are other alternatives for hang on back filters, and my experience is limited. I have had success with the Cascade line so when I was in the market for a hang on back, I stayed with that brand.

If you end up with a female RES, she can grow to be 12-14" as ad adult..
