had my 2 baby turtles about 2 months now ,, at first Faria, the bigger of the two, was crazy active, when i took him out of the cage to clean the water he would run(even right off the table one time) where as Napoleon was always shy and if i took him out would find some place out of the way and hide from view
2 weeks ago i went to DC for the weekend(my parents turtle-sat) and when i got back it was complete change. Now Faria almost never leave his basking spot, really havent' seen him eat much, also when before he would look at me, now he keeps that transparent lower eyelid over his eyes almost all the time
i don't see either of them eat much although Napoleon never did least not while i watched, though now he spends most of his time in the water and is the one who constantly stares at me when he sees me watching him
i worry that there sick but aside from personality change i don't really see any symtoms
anyone experiance anything similar to this ? |

also i'd mention that Napoleon now likes to float aimlessly with just top of his shell above and really won't move unless he hits the side of the tank
@ first i thought he was just relaxing but he never shuts his eyes which seems to be there habit when relaxing |

It does sound as if they are ill. I would suggest you raise the temp in the tank to the mid to higher 80's and the basking temp raise to the low 90's. A warmer teperature will boost their immune systems to help fight off any bugs they many have. Watch them close and if they show more symptoms I would suggest getting them in to see a vet. _________________

I do think they are ill. My ex-girlfriend bought a baby turtle that did the same floating thing.
I tried to tell her that her tank was not set up correctly for the poor thing and well, we broke up and the turtle went more down hill. I later found out that the turtle had a muscle problem and couldn't move. She had to help him eat cause he couldn't chase his food. after several months he died. So my question to you:
How big is your tank?
How have you set up your tank? (Filtration, basking, heaters, waste clean up)
Do you use any products to help the water? (turtle clean)
Do you give them any nutrions? (Repton)
Dou you feed them in there habitat?
What are you feeding them? |

Also, when you say that his eyes stay closed, that a good sign that he has some sort of infection.
I found my little guys eyes swollen one morning and he wouldn't leave his basking area without being aroused. He wasn't really interested in food as much as usual and he just wasn't himself. It turned out he had a respitory infection. Raising the temp helped and I really had to coerce him into eating, because he'll need a lot of vitamins and UVB to fight the infection. It's been three weeks now and he's finally better! A lot of sleepless nights, but he pulled through. We did take him to the vet twice, once for a vitamin shot and once for eye drops, but neither really seemed to help. Just took time, though I've heard some sad stories of turtles that didn't make it.
Good luck! |
