I recently moved into a rented house and was informed that there are around 12 turtles or so that live in the backyard. These turtles have lived here for the last ten years or more. I feel it's a perk of the house to be honest. The turtles, I have been told, come to the back door to be fed. I have been keeping my eye out for the first few to come up from hibernation. Yesterday, for the first time I had a turtle at the door. Just one so far has made it up from the earth. I love animals and want to do a good job taking care of these family pets. There was a turtle pond that the last tenants left and I have cleaned it out and it should be all ready for the guys. I have a lot of questions about what to feed them ect. I want to do all I can because they are so neat. The guy/girl that showed up this morning all I had to feed him with was dog food. He/she seemed to really enjoy this. I don't know what to feed them to keep them healthy. I have read a few posts and still am confused. Any tips or hints would be welcome. Glad to find a forum with good people to ask questions to. Thanks for the welcome all. I believe the turtles are mostly box turtles because I live in Oklahoma, but am not sure; gotta wait for all of them to show up! Thanks in advance.

welcome to the board Smile turtles coming to the door, sounds cute!

To begin with, dog food is not the right diet for turtles. They're probably adults and so their diet should consist mostly of veggies. You can feed them Romaine Lettuce (NOT iceberg) and carrots. It's better if u also bring them their pellets from a pet shop. These pellets have all the vitamins and minerals and everything they will need.

good luck with the backyard neighbors and if u need any info, don't hesitate to ask Smile
