| hi, i'm a newbie (to turtles and this site). my RES's nails appear to be getting long, do i need to provide a substrate so he can do some digging? i've read that substrate is hard to clean, is there another way to provide an adequate way for my RES to scratch around and naturally file his own nails? or will i have to do it manually? the manual way seems difficult, he doesn't enjoy being picked up so i try to minimise this. any advice would be great. |

long nails are not a big deal, but if you want substrate, go with river rocks, they are big and the turt wont swallow them. he will dig, and it gets annoying, especially when you are trying to study (i have exams now), to hear rocks banging aroudn. if you are really worried about it, you can do it the manual way, but long nails might jsut mean that you have a male. _________________ I love my turtles! |
