Hi there!
My wife and I just bought a red-eared slider a couple days ago. We've named him Tucker... he's very fun. I just have a couple questions and worried new-"parent" syndrome.
1. Tucker sleeps an awful lot, hanging out in the reeds. How much sleep do baby red-ears need/usually have? How long can a turtle sleep underwater?
2. About how much do baby sliders eat? He ate about a pellet earlier yesterday and then my wife fed him a little bit of ground beef in the evening.
3. What is the best strategy to get Tucker to recognize us? Regular feeding time? We have a separate feeding container to use.
4. Tucker's shell is hard, his underside is not so hard. Is this normal?
5. Is it good to handle and pet Tucker? He seems really shy right now. When I put him back in the tank from feeding or petting he hides by the filter or in the rocks... I'm assuming he's just getting used to his new environment.
Thanks for a response... I'm sure he's fine, Suzy and I are just over-protective at this stage. Tucker'll be a good way to help us let go for when we have our human children. =D

| He is still new to his surroundings. However I would be concerned with the softer side of the shell. Maybe normal. Give him another week or so if he still isnt active or gets worse take him to the vet. |

I agree. It's all new for him, and turtles are naturally shy creatures.
Just give him a bit of time. I definately agree with taking him to the vet too.
Welcome, by the way, do you have any pics? _________________ Have a nice day, and remember to smile and be nice to all! |

| Thanks! We actually received an aquarium and some supplies for a future turtle as a wedding gift in august from turtle-owning friends of ours. It was great. =) |
