So over the last few weeks the water in the tank is green. I get alage on the rocks which I scrub off each week and I clean the tank out each week as well.I understand that the light causes alage on the rocks but what is causing the water to go green? Is there anything out there to keep the water from going green? I just cleaned the tank out today and normally with in 3- 4 days the water is green and you cant see in the tank.I was wondering if having fish in there is causing this or maybe over feeding cause I feed fish flakes to the fish and then my turtle food.I am a clean freak and have learned to deal with the alage on the rocks but the green water is driving me mad, please help!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance to those who answer |

I dont know. I dont have problem with the water turning green. I have a filter that I use when I fill tanks with water. But it is not necessary to have. I just used it cuz my bro got to filter water for his salt water tanks. I wish I could help. This site may or may not help but check it out.

do u have a filter? check the media in it, it could be causing that green thing. it could also be the same reason of algae. do u have the tank next to a window?? _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Hello to all
I have had the same issue for along time, the water turning green,,
My son who worked at a tropical fish place, which also carried turtles and reptiles, he told me I had to let bacteria build up in the filter,( I have a 35 gallon tank with a fluval 404) I wasn't sure about this so I kept changing the water, I finally decided to try his way, the water got a light green, but I left it alone and 2 days later it was clear again, now I just add a little water every week and it has been perfect, haven't changed the water in3 or 4 weeks, I know it doesn't sound right but it workes fine.
go figure. |

I change my tanks twice a year, the tanks just like a fish tank needs to cycle...build up GOOD bacteria. Until that good bacteria is there the bad will be there, after the good stuff builds up it will eat the bad and the tank will clear again. Depending on the size of the tank that can take from a week to three. Given time the tank will be fine. If you change the water it starts all over. The only thing in a turtle tank to watch is the nitrite levels, as those can harm the turtle shells. If the levels are high then take out about 1/4 to 1/2 the water and that will have dropped the nitrite levels down with out killing all the good bacteria out.
All I do weekly is net the big junk out, and if the filter isn't running good rinse the pads for it. Other then that I fill and leave it be. My tanks are clear and clean. _________________ 3 sulcata,11 red ears,1 yellow belly,1 melanistic slider,1 map,1 western painted,2 3 toe boxies,1 striped mud,2 japanese pond,2 common musk,1 russian,1 ornate wood,1 FL Cooter,7 annam pond,2 back wood,1 Malayan box,1 Red belly |

i typically get the same problem during the winter, i think it has something to do with the angle of the sunlight... i scrub everything and i clean and change my filter, but my tank is by a window so i do get a bit of an algae problem... just keep cleaning, and a backdrop that blocks at least most of the incoming sunlight really helps... if all else fails, you can always find a new spot to put the tank... _________________ I'm back!
