Hello. New to the forums but I've been on the forums for the past week. =)
It's great to see so many avid turtle lovers.
I recently picked up two baby RES. They are currently in the mini-rubbermaid until I can get a hold of a filter and a bask for my old 10 gallon tank.
I was looking over a certain website and they seperate a "checklist" according to the turtle size. Since mine are still the size of a fifty cent coin, how long would my 10 gallon setup cost? I realize I should get at least a 20 gallon filter. According to the website, the FilStar XP2 Canister Filter would work, but how long would it really last? And is it too powerful to the point my poor babies would get stuck to it? I wouldn't want to spend 100 dollars on a filter that would only last a month or two. If I ever upgrade to the 20 gallon or bigger, would the FilStar XP2 Canister Filter still be good?
And I might as well ask since i'm posting so much. Roughly, how long would it take for the 2 baby RES to grow up to be adult RES? My budget isn't great, but I'll do the very best I can for my babies |

welcome to the board
a 10-gallon wouldn't hold for too long but sinceu have it then u can use it for the few coming months then upgrade to a bigger one. u can use rubbermaids if ur budget is tight, they're cheaper and come in bigger sizes. the filter should be 4x the tank's size in order to see it actually cleaning cz they are made for fish tanks and turtles are much messier than fish. again, if u think u can't get it now then invest in a more important think like UV bulbs, heaters,.. and u can replace the filter by daily water changes. a 10-gallon somehow shouldn't need lots of work and effort
good luck with ur little guys. btw, what did u call them? _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Thanks = ) I wish there were nicer looking rubbermaids. I haven't thought of a name for them yet. As of now they are nameless I still need to discuss it with the GF, heh. |

an update:
I just bought a 20 gallon tank. The long version. It's still about 1 foot in height, but it's very long. I'm going to wait a little bit longer until I put my 2 baby RES in it. They still still an inch each at most.
Sometimes it doesn't seem like they need that much space. They spend most of their time in the corners and basking/sleeping near the rock.
Also, any idea on a filter? I keep hearing about the Rena Filstar xP3, but I don't know how long that'll last me. |

My sister and mom just walked into Walmart and bought the filter for my 10 gallon tank I'm not sure what kind mine is, but it's for a 10-30 gallon. She's been using it for awhile now, nearly a year I guess, since that's about how long ago I've had her. She's almost 8 inches, and it keeps her water crystal clear.
I'm moving her to a 65 (I think) gallon tank next month. I'm a little nervous because I don't know what is coming with the tank so I might have to buy a whole bunch of stuff.
However, don't forget that you can use more than one filter at once if your turtle outgrows it. So, you could still use it along with another filter, especially in a larger tank.
I don't think you have to worry about your turtles getting stuck in the filter too much. They are strong swimmers. Don't forget, these filters typically are used for teeny-tiny fishies
You might want to keep the 10 gallon incase they start fighting when they get older (like 3+ inches) and you have to seperate them.
Good luck! _________________ I love my turtle....
My wonderful sister payed out the wazoo to get me her so I guess I better love her |
