I am new here and have a question about shells? I have a teeny RES and have had him for about 1 month. I really didn't look at or feel his shell really carefully when I got him, but have lately (I didn't want to stress him). Should there be any "give" to the shell when pressed on? How hard should the shell be? I hope this isn't a really stupid question. Tommy is very active and eating well. He is what is referred to as a "dollar" or "dime-store" baby. What causes soft shell if that is what he has? Does he need a supplement? TIA

Hatchlings shells are soft for a while and it sounds like that is what you have there. He should slowly start to harden up. Make sure he gets a calcium suppliment like a cuttle bone and that he has proper UVB lighting or that he gets UN-filtered sun at least an hour a day and he should be just fine.

Thank you for your response. I went to the local pet store and got a better food for babies with added calcium. I also bought one of those turtle shaped things that are added to the water. I only chipped off tiny pieces for the water and Tommy tried to eat them and I had to pull a piece from him!!! It didn't desolve like I thought it was supposed to. It makes sense that because he is a baby, his shell is not really hard yet! I have tried to do lots of reading and never read that about baby shells. Tommy is so funny and I love watching him and he seems to love watching me!!! He has such a personality already. Laughing
