hi my name is teri. i have been doing some reserch on this fantastic site. i love it. well i gess uall can call me mom. i am 46 and a mother of 2 terrific boys. my olderst is 23 and in the us army stationed at a undisclosed location somewhere in the middle east. best wishes to him. and my other son 19 and in his 2nd yr in college for artchitectural drafting.
i say i'm new to this again, coz when i was 9 i had a baby turtle. my grandpa came home one night, and knocked his house (small fish bowl) off of the table. timmy ended up in my paps shoe, needless to say timmy went to the big turtle house in the sky.
well my husband and i have a outside house set up for turtles that we find on the road or are hurt, we bring them home feed them, make sure they are ok, keep them a few days and then set them free in a safer place. when we were over at a friends house this past weekend. i was looking in his koi pond. and saw a baby turtle head, ( which he did not want in the pond) so we caught him/her. we named him little ben, (after the steeler big ben) coz he/her had to ride home on are motorcycle. he is a painted turtle from what i can figure. he likes the outside house we put him in for now. well needles to say after 2 more visits to are friends house we now have 3. little ben is 1 1/2" from head to tail. Bernice( also had to ride the motorcycle home) is 1 3/8" from htt, and sketch ( road home in my jeep) is 1 3/8" from htt.
are they considered hatchlings? they are eating like little pigs. they love being in our out side tub. also i was wondering, during the day the temp gets to around 75* - 82* but at night it goes down to, well this morning it was 64*. will this temp drop hurt them at all? thank you
here arae a couple pix http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h30/danger77_2006/mvc-004f.jpg

welcome to the board rescuer cute little babies u've got. ur friends don't know what they're missing!! painted turtles are so cute
those babies are hatchlings and they are measured by shell length so they should be 1" or a bit less. how cute! hmm the temps are a bit cold for them now and they're so small to stay outdoors. is there any way u could move them in for a while until they're bigger? and btw, they do have water right? well i assume so but i couldn't see any in the pix.
anyways, i live in the middle east and it's calm nowadays if that helps about ur son _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

thank you for the info. yes they do have about 5 gal of water, some stones, a piece of drifwood and a air pump. right now i don't have a tank to put them in for in the house. and i don't think we will be setting them free. so i need to get one. we were talking to some divers at the lake we usually release the turtles. and they told us that the lake is 300 acers, and in spots 50' to 60' deep, with gold fish at least 6' long. so we will be finding a new releast lake also.
i will be getting a heater for them. asap. thank you.
i took some pix of there house. the first one is with the cover, for a night. the 2 is how we set up the inside. any sugestions. _________________ teri |

u could get a rubbermaid to keep them in rubbermaids are cheap and come in big sizes. releasing them is good but not now cz they're still babies and when it's winter time it'll still be too early for them to hibernate. larger turtles will at least eat their food (not mentioning the worse scenarios )
the links u have in the 1st post are the same pix i saw yesterday, couldn't find the new ones.. _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

I have him in a cooler (lid off!) with a nice rock in there. He seems to like it. I washed his wound with an antiseptic wash and applied ointment. His head is way out looking at us and seems really happy to be in the water. He likes his rock too. We will continue to monitor him and update you on his condition. We have been unable to get him to open his mouth or eat anything. We put grass, dead flies and fruit... and he'll eat nothing! I am trying to get my camera to be recognized by the computer to post a pic. Thank you for your help! I will be in touch... _________________ Thanks from me Sherri and Max! |

Max:
he won't eat cz as i told u new turtles feel insecure with changes. try canned tuna, it's smelly and should help move his taste buds.
danger77: it's ok but am sorry i still can't find the links _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Hello I'm 57 so I guess Im a mom to all here too. Smile.
My hubby gave me 2 red eared sliders for Christmas 2004 and they are doing nicely. I like your tank, but I think you got too much stuff in there, there doesn't seem to be much room for the turtles to swim around it. I have a 30 gallon tank, but I'm going to "graduate" to a bigger tank, perhaps 55 gallon. How big is your tank that you got there on the top of furniture?
The pail you got there with decorations is really cute/ but how do you keep the water clean?
Good to meet someone here who is in the same age bracket as me. I too have 3 sons and one daughter, ages 28, 26, 23, and 15.
So kind of you to rescue the turtles, God bless your soul!

hi nice to meet you, i gess you would be mom. thats a big family.
the tank is a 20 gal long. my husband fixed the inside, i thought it was to much also. but i need to get someone else to tell him that, to get him to take some stuff out. so far he has listened to everything that i found out on here. or they would be outside all summer. we do clean the tank and stones everyday and put in fresh water. with the hubby wanting to feed them all the time it gets dirty, i can't get it through to him that they will beg for food and only need fed 2 times a day. (small portions.) maybe this will help. thank you. _________________ teri |

wow those babies got a lovely setup they are good swimmers but cz they're still young and especially if they didn't live in deep water, they still didn't get the chance to learn how to swim. it doesn't look too deep but if u see them struggling u can decrease the level a bit and then increase it again with time as they master swimming more. another option is that u could get tall plants and put them in. that way the little guys could hold onto them for a rest _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

well the koi pond was about 6' deep and when we tried to catch them they were diving and would come up in different places in the pond. it took a couple hours to catch one. they would dive and we would have to waite for like 15 to 20 min. before we would see one again. they are going under the bridge and around everything. they were all setting on top of the bridge last night. so they are coming out to sun. just once in a while it looked like when they tried to come up for air, they had a little truble. i think i will get some tall plants though, that sounds like a good idea. thank you _________________ teri |
